My MAN of The Year 2015 Is Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, By Murtala Adogi Mohammed
The hallmark of a true leader is not just the ability to rule well but also the ability to nurture and groom his associates. THE JAGABAN HAS DONE IT…
Tinubu, dictate the pendulum of Nigerian Politics, if you think I’m joking ask President Muhammadu Buhari, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, Olusegun Obasanjo or Atiku Abubakar…they will tell you their own story on ‘Who is Tinubu’ I’m comfortably sure that with out the marriage of convenience between Tinubu and Buhari, I doubt much if APC could have not won the last election, Tinubu was the ‘brainbox’ behind the ‘Common Sense Revolution’ that kicked PDP out of power.
Though Tinubu might have his weaknesses, but to me he has no second in the entire northern Nigeria most especially in current national political market square. Ahmed Tinubu is one tough cookie of a politician, a Muslim by faith and a bridge builder who believes in demolishing walls and building relationships with people outside his own home state of Lagos.
After the results of the 12 June 1993 presidential elections were annulled, Tinubu became a founding member of the pro-democracy National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), which mobilized support for the restoration of democracy and recognition of the 12 June results. He went into exile in 1994 and returned to the country in 1998 after the death of Gen Sani Abacha which ushered in a transition to civilian rule.
I judge the man by the strength of his character and what he has accomplished in transforming himself, the political landscape of Southwest and his influence and power as a politician with some vision and multiple talents. Ahmed Tinubu has not only survived Obasanjo, but also occupied him. Left to Obasanjo alone, Lagos State should have been hijacked into the column of the PDP by then. Bola Tinubu was decidedly better prepared than all of the AD Governors combined in 2003. They all failed woefully because Obasanjo tricked them into submission and surrender. Ahmed Tinubu was the only one standing at the end of the day.
I physically met Tinubu once in Kano at Mambayya House, Bayero University Center for Democratic Research and Training CDRT during the 2010 Mallam Aminu Kano annual memorial lecture – after his presentation I was opportune to with some youth engage him in a discussion and he told us that ….“to sustained the my reform agenda in Lagos I was able to developed the capacity of a complete squad…as I’m talking to you now I have 11 Fasholas working as team some as Advisers and some as commissioners” Hmmm…..I said to my self…. Waw.. What a Visionary Leader! I think we need one in my geopolitical space – North Central/Middle Belt at least to nurture and groom emerging leaders, what we have today in the entire North-Central region are self-centered leaders – they don’t see nurturing others as a political priorities
Ahmed Tinubu’s political machine in Nigeria was as effective as Mayor Daley’s political machine in Chicago Politics.
Ahmed Tinubu has used victory of the last election to prove a point that nobody could deny him as space in the Nigerian political showground because politics is a game of numbers. You have got to be able to win to remain in the game. Who says Tinubu is not a political wizard in Nigerian Politics?
Tinubu was able to embolden some of the influential politicians we have in Nigeria today, few among them are;
(1) Prof Yemisi Osinbajo SAN was Tinubu’s Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice. He is today, Nigeria’s Vice President (2) Rauf Aregbesola was Tinubu’s Commissioner for work. Today he is serving his second tenure as Governor of Osun State (3) Babatunde Raji Fashola, SAN was Tinubu’s Chief of Staff and successor in office. He is today Nigeria’s Minister of Power, works and housing (4) Alhaji Lai Muhammed was Tinubu’s first chief of staff. He is today Nigeria’s Minister of information (5) Babatunde fowler was appointed by Tinubu as Chairman of the Lagos state Internal Revenue Service. Today, he is the Executive Chairman of the Federal inland Revenue Service.
At the National Assembly, there are countless “Tinubu boys” who have occupied and are still occupying seats till today. Since 1999, the Tinubu camp has produced almost 98% of the members of the National Assembly from Lagos state. Forget politics, this man is a political enigma.
Tinubu has not only managed to remain extremely relevant, he has continued to control Lagos politics 100%, and South-West 70% Not only that, he manages to carry his boys along and today they occupy critical position in our national life Take it or leave it, Tinubu is today, Nigeria’s most powerful politician. It didn’t just happen by chance. He worked very hard for it. Very, very and strategically hard…
To me, Tinubu has earned his wings…and you can’t stop him from flying. ….Congratulations to Bola Ahmad Tinubu, My Man of the 2015…..
