Mukhtar Yero: Surging Forward In Spite of Challenges By Usman Tabari
“The world is a dangerous place to live in, not because of those who do evil, but because of those who watch and let it happen”. – Enstain
The politics of the contemporary world, just as the civilization of the first democracies had been enmeshed in unprecedented controversies, crises and unbridled ambitions. In fact, politics and all its corollaries are all about controversies, blackmails and double standards. According to Mikhail Grouchier “political opinion is a capricious commodity”. Rightly so, when political permutation eventually hit a crises point, we assume it is all about healthy contest of democracy.
As it were, in Nigeria and especially Kaduna State, the story is the same as in so many other states; Political crises all over. Apart from all of these, there are nocturnal attacks which are often carried out in brutal regularity. In the face of these challenges, it is often difficult for any meaningful development to take place. However, in spite of all these, the state governor Alhaji Mukhtar Yero is not ruffled or staggered. He has remained calm, consistent and dogged in his vision and Agenda for Kaduna State. The consistent attempt and frantic efforts of the agents of retrogression have not deterred him from reaching out to the people with his developmental stride; which has been seen as a giant stride towards keeping promises made to the people of the state. In reminiscence, I would like to entrench in the minds of every patriotic citizen of Kaduna State the fact that Mukhtar Yero has been bold and daring by maintaining the initial promise he made during his inauguration. The promise of threading the egalitarian paths they took with the late Yakowa. He has been magnanimous in trying to complete the projects initiated by the Late Yakowa and in the process initiated new ones. In this regard, it is being witnessed by all, the various roads maintenance and rehabilitations going on in the nooks and crannies of Kaduna State.
Now leave all of these. It is not in the guise of metaphor but reality that since the assumption of office, Mukhtar has introduced a strategic security blueprints that has effectively ensured the existing ambience of peace within the state. That achievement is not without some consistent effort from the governor. To effectively reverse and revive the mutual harmony that has been lost among various sections of Socio-Cultural, religion and tribal divides, the executive governor in consultation with his security chiefs have come up with a near water tight initiative that could create a safe back water devoid of all forms of threats. Regime of terror, reign drastically reduced if not all together abated. In all fairness to the governor, he undertakes the policy of contact diplomacy, where he presents himself in person in crises area and flash points. One couple of weeks back there was a nocturnal attack in a community of Manchok in Southern Kaduna were lives and properties were destroyed. In the heat of that violent crisis, the executive governor hit the road to the community while the crisis was ongoing. His presence there was a soothing balm and compelling force that stopped the mayhem from further escalation.
These and other numerous interventions have conspired to necessitate the presentation of Award for peace in far way Britain. In the global search for peace, the idea of one man’s efforts toward that effect is considered a unique and humanitarian empathy.
Interestingly, we all know that there are some forces trying hard and consistently in order to give him the mark of the beast or make his task difficult and futile. In the midst of all of these, Mukhtar never considered the antics of such retrogressive agents as serious threats to his Vision for the state. He never replies political opponents who are quick to go on air with criticism against his person or his policies.
Against all odds, and the apparent paucity of funds, the governor has reached out to one of the critical sectors of the progressive state; the education sector. From Tertiary Institution through Secondary and primary schools, the executive governor has intervened through some well conceived plans of actions and policies formulations. In this year’s budget, 26 percent of the total budget was allocated to education sector. Germain to this, the Kaduna State University, which is at adjudged as the fastest growing University in the Sub-Saharan Africa has been given top drawer attention by the government either through massive employment drive, expansion programmes, upgrading of academic facilities and infrastructure to robust initiations and accreditation of some vital courses. Generally, education at all level has been stimulated for effective quality delivery.
Along the same corridor of dividends of democracy, executive governor has effectively taken a bold step towards health care delivery, agricultural resuscitation programmes and youth empowerment initiatives. To bloster his muscular political pedigree, he put to use the allocation of SURE-P funds of Kaduna State, through the effective utilization of youth potentials that are enrolled into vocational institutions and other vibrant self empowerment initiative. The youth so empowered through indoctrination of vocational knowledge are provided with start up stipends which includes financial assistance and working utensils. On record more than six thousand youth have graduated from these institutions are now self employed.
It is therefore necessary to appreciate that fact that Dr. Muhktar Ramalan Yero sincerely means well for the people of Kaduna State. It is seen in that fact that instead of hiding behind the facades of lousy political problems or deeply entrenched biblical hatred that has compromised all basic development initiative, he came up and took the road least traveled in order to deliver the dividends of democracy to the people of Kaduna State. It is truly said, to whom much is given much expected.
