On the 12th of June, three Israeli teenagers went missing near their religious school in Hebron and immediately, the Israeli military was dispatched to carry out a search operation called Operation Brother’s Keeper. This operation included house searches, raids, about 350 people were arrested and some Palestinians were killed in the process before the teens were unfortunately found shot dead and buried under rocks.
Then almost a couple of months earlier, some 2369 Miles from Israel, precisely in Nigeria, 273 girls were abducted from Government Secondary School in Chibok town; Borno State and what did the government do? The military first of all lied that they had rescued the girls. The abduction and the lack of effort by the military to rescue the girls ignited protests and the next step the government took was to accuse protesters of fabricating the abduction to bring down government before the wife of the President (not the President himself) ordered the arrest of some protesters. The government madness and irresponsibility didn’t stop there. The President midst all this didn’t send the military on any special operation to rescue the abducted girls, he didn’t try to contact the abductors to negotiate their release, all he did was set up a fact-finding committee. You heard me right,a fact-finding committee.
As I write today, it is more than three months those Chibok girls have been kidnapped. Mr. President has not paid their family a single visit, he hasn’t addressed the nation on what he is doing to #BringBackOurGirls and worst of all those Chibok girls are still in captivity. If Mr. President has forgotten about the Chibok girls, the rest of us have not. That is why some courageous and relentless citizens continuously sit out at Unity Fountain to remind him that those chibok girls are not yet back. That is why Malala Yousufzai has just one birthday wish which is to "Bring back our girls, now and alive & out;. And that is the reason I write this piece.
President Goodluck Jonathan has refused to welcome or address the #BringBackOurGirls protesters and instead sent some clowns to address them. It is this same President that went ahead to write an uninspiring article in Washington post that started with a big lie that “Nothing is more important than bringing home Nigeria’s missing girls”. We all know that nothing is more important to the President than winning the coming 2015 Presidential election. He also wrote another crap that “I am a parent myself, and I know how awfully this must hurt.” This same line was repeated by the minister of Finance, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala on CNN recently in an interview with Christiane Amanpour. When President Jonathan's uncle was abducted on the 23rd,February this year in his hometown of Otuoke, he was rescued unharmed after 17 days.
When the mother of Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala was abducted from her palace in Ogwashi-uku towards the end of 2012,the police,DSS and army swung to action immediately by carrying out raids and arresting almost 70 people. Governor Uduaghan of Delta State also suspended state functions and relocated to Ogwashi-uku, and without setting up a fact-finding committee, President Jonathan also gave orders to the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Mohammed Abubakar, to rescue her on or before, December 15, 2012. Behold! Mama Okonjo was rescued on 14th, December, 2012 which was a day before the President’s deadline and just 7 days in the hands of the kidnappers.
The #ChibokGirls reminds us of our tragedy as a nation that govt never cares as long as it doesn’t affect a “somebody”. Those Chibok girls have remained in captivity almost forever because they don't have the privilege of knowing anybody that matter in the government. Nobody searched or is searching for them and Mr President isn’t giving law enforcement agencies any deadline to #BringBackOurGirls because it is not the child of a Minister or President that is missing. After all this is Nigeria and some men are more equal than others.
