Mother Of Tailor Shot Dead By Lagos DPO Hospitalised
The mother of 23-year-old apprentice tailor, Jamiu Ayoade, allegedly killed by the Divisional Police Officer, Ijesha Police Station, CSP Mohammed Yakubu, is in intensive care in a hospital in Ibadan, Saturday PUNCH has learnt.
Jamiu’s brother, Taofeek, told our correspondent that their mother had been put on admission after the news of her son reached her.
It was learnt that her health deteriorated because she had been inconsolable since she got the news of Jamiu’s death.
The DPO had reportedly led some policemen to Wosilatu Daudu Street, Ijeshatedo, around 7.30pm on Sunday, May 7. Jamiu was said to be attending his friend’s birthday party on the street.
The policemen allegedly conducted a raid in the area and shot in the air to disperse the gathering in the process.
It was reported that Yakubu (DPO) chased Jamiu and other fun seekers into a building and shot him in the head at a close range. One Akeem also sustained a gunshot injury in the hand.
Jamiu was said to have bled to death while he was being rushed to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Idi-Araba.
Yakubu had later alleged that Jamiu was a wanted man but the victim’s family had debunked the allegation.
The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Olarinde Famous-Cole, had said the team raided the area to arrest some cult members.
The Lagos State Police Command said Yakubu has been detained as an investigation into Jamiu’s death continues.
But the Lagos State Government has insisted that the DPO must be prosecuted.
“We sympathised with the family. They were invited for a meeting today (Tuesday) and they had briefed us on what happened. We will petition the relevant authorities and follow up to ensure justice in this matter,” director of the Lagos State Public Advice Centre,Mrs. Tola Akinsanya, said.
