FICTION: Misadventures of Usman Dan Fodio (1) By Olakunle AbdulBasit Somoye
It was indeed a sunny day, followed by a quantum of individual activities; the people in Abuja municipal never seem to be disturbed by the paradoxical weather as it has become a norm since the inception of the first Gbagi dwellers, the sun now resting on the horizon while a yellow streak of thin cloud spreads over its illuminating glory. The Muslims call to prayer could be heard from afar while swarms of tired looking people trotter to reach their individual destinations.
The birds in the sky are going to roost, meanwhile three agric foul ran deftly past moving dusty legs just in time before the sun reluctantly shifts and gradually darkness spread across the horizon like a bed sheet. Only a lonely star appeared to stand watch, it is completely dark now but the humid air and chilly breeze that raises dusts would not deter the workings of a devious hollow heart that lurks close by as he grins with a smirk that speaks a thousand vile thoughts, the machinations of dark fantasy is at hand.
It is 6:27 pm, Usman was strolling to buy dabinu (dates) in preparation to break his fast, his mind was completely awash with Hauwa, his new found love and he is calculating the right time to propose to her, hawee, his slim, light skinned malo chick whose pink lips melts his heart each time he looks at them, her eyes are shaped in almond sizes and her nose is a bit pointed giving her the elegance of a beauty queen.
He was still in this daydreaming state when he kicked a stone which jolted him back to reality, as he bends to pick the stone from the road, a rough looking man, drove haphazardly to a screeching halt behind him, almost knocking him off, he flung the door without regard, and as Usman turned to look what the matter was about the man punched him in the throat, dismantling his sense of directions, and all he could remember was his mind going blank and his eyes blinking rapidly, his head tilted slightly as is gaze is by now on the yellowish streaky cloud formation and then total darkness, the last image that flashed through his eyes was Hauwa.
The door was flung opened and the kidnapper pushed Usman roughly inside, his two hands were tied from behind, he was pushed inside violently, falling flat on his face, he managed to sit up while gasping for air, he looked around briefly to see the face of the man talking, the room is almost completely dark except for only a dull red bulb that illuminates grotesque shadows of some other abducted boys, Usman sensed that the room although small currently contains about 40 people, he squints his eyes in an attempt to see the faces inside which was rather difficult, by the way, where are my glasses? Usman asked himself, while momentarily feeling the cold floor in search for his glasses, it then dawned on him that it was a futile attempt cause it probably must have fallen off from the place of his abduction, cursing under his breathe he continues to blame his poor eyesight. Suddenly a deep coarse laughter breaks the silence that had engulfed the room for what seems like a decade.
Shekau is now speaking in his adulterated hausa, “makarantan boko, haramun ne, amma kune za ku taimakamana mu yaki kafiran nan” – (Western Education is forbidden, “but you people are going to help us fight these unbelievers), amma Goodluck Jonathan, Obama, Vladmir Putin, dukan su kyankesau ne- (are all cockroaches), suba komai bane zamu gamad dasu (they are nobody, we will squash them).
zamu gamad dasu ,en uwana na, na cameroun, chad, niger, sudan, zasu yaki makiyan na da duk karfin su (we will finish them, my brothers in cameroun, chad, Niger, Sudan will help in fighting off these evildoers in their capacity),
ku dade zasu shigu dayawa, baza a samu kwanciyar hankali ba, sai sun ji tsoron mu (more funding will come, there will not be peace, they have to fear us).
Sun che wai makarantan boko enchi ne, menene enchi? Tun da har ya kai ma mata suna yawo da wando, ku kalla abun da boko ya jawo mana , sun zo kanem borno empire sun raba kasan mu.? They say education is freedom, what is freedom? Freedom that our daughters be allowed to wear panties around?, look at what these so called education has caused, they come to kanem borno empire and divided our land).
Mey nijeria ?duk lokacin da muka gama da wa’inan mutanan ,nijeria zata rushe .talakawa sun fi masu kudin yawa, suna so muyi musu apuwa amma ba subar kama zaruman mu ba, (what is Nigeria? By the time we are through with these people there will be no more Nigeria, there are more poor people and less rich people, they want to give us amnesty and yet still capture our courageous fighters).
zamu nuna musu mun fi karfin wawan kudin su , tun farko sun wulakanta mu, sanan yanzu suna so muyi musu apuwa (we will tell them that we are bigger than their foolish amnesty, from birth neglected all of you now they want to give you amnesty).
Sai suje Abuja su pannatar da manya manyan kudade, su kwana da matayan mu,saboda haka sai sun ga sakamakon abun da sukayi ) they will go to Abuja to share big big money, sleep with our girls anyhow, so they must feel our presence.
Duk kafiri daya da kuka kashe, zaku samu ladan shi anan duniya har da lahira, kuma in ba ku da niyar mutuwa ni zan yanka muku kai kafin lokacin ku ( for each one of those kafiruns you kill you will be rewarded both in this earth and in heaven, and if you are not ready to die, I will personally behead you before your time).
The room was now eerily calm and it seems someone in the room is going to lose his head that night, the only consolation for Usman was that the rope used in tying his hands is loose and ‘with considerable amount of effort, it would be unfastened in no time soon, though he is afraid of what might befall him if the plan in his head did not work, he shifted his attention to the slow repetitive exchange of their collective heartbeats thumping uniformly at the background while giving Shekau’s speech a devious flavor to his baritone tattletale.
Contrary to the popular belief, Shekau and his bandwagon of evil men are in Abuja, right in the heart of the Federal Capital Territory, an emergency meeting is on-going at the villa about fresh reports of the insurgents being in town, the service chiefs peered into space when the information was decoded, what an affront to the intelligence of the state secret service, the service chiefs and the commander in chief of the armed forces who once alleged that the insurgents have pushed into the dreaded forest, presido who is now angry at his service chiefs “if this people succeed in making me look bad I will personally finish you, do all you can to contain these bad belle people or else., you are dismissed! Err mama peace where is my ogogoro?
The moon is now shining brightly across the horizon to the lakes and from the rivers that flows the moon’s shadow runs deep even into the contours of the hills where his voice could be heard five feet away “any one of you who tries to run away from this our noble cause will meet his doom like this boy, two staunch followers of shekau brought the boys head to the occult altar, as shekau was reciting few subliminal words, he raised his hands with an alarming speed and then “wham” effortlessly the head rolls to the other end of the room and blood spattered across the wall, the body was struggling to hang on to life, his hands reaching out for his head, blood continued to gush out unabated from until life slowly leaked away.
To be continued…
