Letter to My Unborn Child by Ajewole Bejide
Greetings to you on behalf of your mum and everyone here, how are you and I hope the angels are taking good care of you? I trust Gabriel and co, they were nice to me when I was also there like you are now years back.
I have had to delay your coming here for some reasons, same reasons I communicated to you years back when I last wrote to you. Infact child, the situation is now worse than the last time.
I am through with my programme and I also did a compulsory one year service to this nation, during which my movement was restricted. I was paid 19800 Naira or 132 Dollars a month for the service, a stipend I get late in the next month for the proceeding month.
Am through now and I still can’t get a job despite my effort. Am not the worst student child, but it seems even the federal government gave up on us all! The ones that I have seen so far have been asking for a little something and some others wants cheap labour.
Of course, President Yar Adua (May his soul rest in peace) is no longer the president, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan is the new man in charge. He is not entirely new to us but to you he might be. He came in as acting and later he finished Yar Adua’s term and Nigerians voted him afresh last year.
Son, our president is a shoeless one, he had no shoes back then as he is the son of a fisherman from Otueke. He promised us heaven and some boys who called themselves neighbor to neighbor told us so many sweet things that made a lot vote for Goodluck and not PDP!
Goodluck payed those who voted him back with a lot of hardship, he deregulated the downstream sector and removed subsidy from Petrol, a commodity that is the main driver of the Nigerian economy! A lot of people were stranded, your dad had to pay double to get back to Sokoto after I came in for the Christmas break!
Child, did I tell you about the numerous people that lost their lives in senseless bombings in northern Nigeria? It has even become a norm that the president did not bother to issue his copy and paste statement after Jaji was hit last week! We are now used to the attacks by our brothers and sisters!
Did I tell you about Farouk and Otedola? Those ones provided the needed comedy with their cap banking saga, they took corruption and bribery to a new height. Need I add that they are both free men? They are members of PDPigs, the saga was just a minor misunderstanding between two party members!
Child, we are building a new banquet hall at the cost of 2.2 Billion naira! Yes we need the hall, we must look ‘tush’ and sophisticated in the face of people while in actual fact youths like your dad have not eaten for days! We have to look good even if our youths looks tattered and sleeps under the bridge with no food!
Talking of food child, the president’s 1 Billion naira food allocation generated a lot of issues that he had to tell us during his media chat that he doesn’t even eat well as he eats twice a day! He failed to add that he even doesn’t eat sometimes as he fasts for the nation!
The nation is now in a flower growing spree, we are doing green Nigeria and so from Fashola to Amosun, from Mimiko to Aregbesola, all they do is plant flowers and some even do fountains while they neglect youth empowerment and economic development.
Child, you can see my pains and some of the reasons why I have to delay your coming but please trust me, I am doing everything to see that you come soon. I give a DAMN about your future unlike our president and so I have to be sure you are not coming here to suffer.
Your mum can’t wait to have you same for your uncles, aunts, cousins and most importantly I can’t wait to have you too but I have to be sure you do not get exposed to all the senseless things going on in the country.
Extend my greetings to the heavenly hosts and please explain to them that I don’t have money to contribute to buy another plane for my pastor hence my not going to church today.
Thanks child, I look forward to seeing your beautiful face soon (I know you will be beautiful because your mum is gorgeous and me your dad isn’t bad looking either)
