Kwara’s Education Sector Deteriorates Despite Huge Govt Funding, APC Guber Candidate Says

The continued decay in Kwara education sector has again been brought to the limelight by the gubernatorial candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state, Mr. Abdulrahman AbdulRazaq.

A support group of the candidate called “AA4Kwara” had on Tuesday, revealed that despite the billions of naira allocated to the education sector by the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed, the resources have since failed to achieved desired outcomes.

According to the group, Governor Fatai budgeted N24.1 billion to education in 2015 (representing 20% of the budget), N30.4 billion in 2016 (representing 26.2% of the budget), N29 billion in 2017 (representing 24% of the budget), and another N12.6 billion in 2018 (representing 11.8% of the entire budget), yet the sector deteriorated to a state of shame.

The support group said the survey reports on the education sector in the state was far from the state government claims about building schools, revolutionizing the sector, implementing many structural reforms & policies.

While huge funding has been allocated to the sector, the group said dilapidated and deteriotating structures are seen in almost institution of learning in the state.

It listed many abandoned projects at “Akerebiata LGEA School, Kwara Polytechnic Permanent site, another abandoned projects at Kwara Polytechnic, abandoned block of classroom at Community Secondary school, Oke-Oye Oja.

“Abandoned hostel at Sheik Abdulkudir Secondary school, uncompleted block of classroom at Kwara Poly secondary school, uncompleted block of classroom at Otefon LGEA School in Moro Local government, dilapidated Schools/classrooms in Ekiti Local Government Area of the state, and another dilapidated school structures in SHARE town of Ifelodun Government Area.”

The many dilapidated academic structures in the state has affected the quality of students been turned out by the state, the group said.

“The WAEC ratings of Kwara State performance also added more credence to the fact the present Government in Kwara state is stagnant on the way forward to chart a new course.

In 2018, WAEC rated Kwara 18th position, in 2017 it was rated same 18th position; in 2016, it was also rated 18th position. In 2015, the state was again rated 16th in 2015 and then 2014, showing no record of academic improvement from the state.

“A year ago, recall that a photo went viral on social media that showed some primary school pupils in Mancha village, Edu Local Government Area of Kwara State sleeping outside. Till today the status quo hasn’t change. it is saddening for our dear state.

“Teachers in both Primary & secondary schools are being owed more than five months salaries which have lowered their motivation to carry out their responsibilities. Few cases of death were reported among the teachers who couldn’t buy drugs for their upkeep,” the group said.

The group however noted that the APC candidate’s “objective is to deliver qualitative, affordable and accessible education for all.”

It said that Mr. AbdulRazaq has promised that his administration will tackle the problems by declaring “a state of Emergency” in the education sector at the takeoff of his administration.”

“AbdulRazaq’s resuscitation plans to revolutionize the sector are re-designing, rehabilitating & ensuring standard educational infrastructure for all Public schools in Kwara state; human resources mapping to determine the specific areas of needed specializations; ending the pilfering of funds and ensuring that allocations to the sector are appropriately applied to the last kobo; ensuring prompt payment of salaries and allowances to all teachers in public schools.

“Resuscitating the inspectorate division of the education sector; placing a premium on relevant skills, competence and professionalism in the recruitment and selection processes; pursuing a deliberate policy of training and retraining to enhance teachers’ capacity; enforcing strict compliance with the approved educational curriculum at all times, and teaching of entrepreneurship skills in secondary schools.”
