Kogi Central Senatorial Rerun: Senator Abatemi-Usman Remains PPA Candidate By Itopa Sumaila
I am surprised to hear that some members of PPA at the state level and groups are saying that they don’t have a candidate in the Kogi Central senatorial election holding tomorrow, Saturday when the National body of the party has written to INEC to affirm their recognition of SENATOR NURUDEEN ABATEMI-USMAN as their candidate for the rerun poll.
It is really unfortunate that the said members at the state level and groups are not enlightened enough to understand the position of INEC as contained in the guideline released for the rerun election. It is also sad that they don’t seem to understand that it is only the national body of a party that is empowered to communicate INEC on the issue of party candidature.
The fact is that nobody can stop Abatemi-Usman as he remains the valid candidate of PPA for the rerun in the face of the law. They appear not to know that the rerun taking place tomorrow is not a fresh election but just a repeat of an election annulled by the court, and as such, no validly nominated candidate can be prevented from participating.
Well, the good thing is that the national body of the PPA has done what is proper by writing INEC to counter the statement of those saying Senator DEEN is not qualified to participate. INEC has cleared him. The law permits him. Some say he can’t contest because he defected to APC. But like I said earlier, this is not a fresh election that requires fresh nomination. It is the same election that is only being repeated.
In the letter sent to INEC from the national secretariat of PPA, which I happen to come across, the party said: “We write regarding the upcoming Kogi Central Senatorial District election scheduled to hold on 20th February, 2016. It has come to our attention that some people are circulating reports that PPA is no longer supporting the candidacy of Senator Nurudeen Abatemi-Usman, who ran on the PPA platform in the original Senatorial election of March, 2015. We are writing to assure INEC in no uncertain terms, that all such claims are wholly false and without merit. We stand in full support of our candidate, Senator Nurudeen Abatemi-Usman and we recognize no other PPA candidate in the coming KCSD elections except his person. Please disregard any claim to the contrary.”
With this letter to INEC from the national body of PPA and duly signed by the Chairman, Chief Peter Ameh and National Secretary, Barr. Kehinde Edun, Senator Abatemi-Usman will certainly be having a smooth ride in tomorrow’s election. His opponents are afraid of him because of the overwhelming support he is getting from the people for the election. He is seen by the people as the best candidate among those cleared by INEC to participate. Those allowing themselves to be used against the wining team will watch as Senator Deen emerges victorious tomorrow. He is the man to beat. He is the people’s choice.
