Khamisu Ahmed Mailantarki – Redefining Leadership
Hon Khamisu Ahmed Mailantarki was born on 19th June, 1975 at Herwagana quarters Gombe to the family of late Alhaji Amadu Mailantarki – a renowned staff of Nigeria Electric Power Authority in the sub-region – he attended Qur’anic school as a child before he was enrolled first into Central Primary School and later Kamara Primary School where he obtained a primary school leaving certificate then moved to Government Day Comprehensive Secondary School, Gombe for his junior Secondary School education. He then obtained a Certificate in Technical Education in the year 1994 from the Federal Technical College, Yaba, Lagos, after which he obtained a BSc (Hons) in Geography from the University of Abuja in the year 2002. He proceeded to get a post graduate Diploma in Environmental Protection and Planning (EPP) in the year 2008 and another Certificate on Private Partnership from the Institute for Public Private Partnership in Washington DC, USA.
He made history in the 2011 polls when he emerged as the legislator from the North-East with the highest number of votes. Representing Gombe, Kwami and Funakaye federal constituencies, he remains one of the youngest and most dynamic members of the Federal House of Representatives and is the Vice-Chairman of the House Committee on FCT Area Councils and a member of several other committees such as Petroleum Upstream, Internal Security, House Services, Human Right, Climate Change & Global Warming, and Solid Minerals Resources.
A renowned philanthropist, Mailantarki founded the Mailantarki Foundation, a foundation dedicated to youth and women empowerment in both Education and Skill Acquisition. The charismatic Gombe APC leader has also rolled out initiative after initiative targeted at improving the lot of his people.
During the recently concluded Ramadan period – in line with his established pattern of reaching out to his people during festive periods – Honourable Mailantarki distributed approximately six million Naira’s worth of foodstuff as well as monetary gifts to all thirty-one wards in his constituency. His efforts were greatly appreciated by people in his constituency and many were heard wondering aloud how he could manage to reach out to them so often, especially in light of the many social welfare projects that he had previously launched.
Prior to the present constituency out-reach programme of further socio-economic empowerment and poverty alleviation, several textbooks had been distributed to various schools and exercise books had been given to students to enhance learning, JAMB forms had been distributed free of charge to students in his constituency, NECO and WAEC fees had been bankrolled and over 200 people had been air-lifted to various places of worship like Saudi Arabia and Jerusalem for pilgrimage. In order to ensure that women – widows especially – were not left out, sewing machines were distributed to them in order to help them become self-reliant. Also, he recently flagged off thirteen motorised boreholes in his constituency at an estimated cost of N100,000,000 after previously donating the hefty sum of N150,000,000 to the Gombe water project – the highest contribution amongst his colleagues.
Mailantarki has, since he assumed office, also consistently tackled the problem of youth unemployment in his constituency. Through him, well over two hundred youths in his constituency have been able to secure jobs in government and security agencies. He has also given extremely valuable items such as cars to many members of his constituency in order to contribute towards their socio-economic development.
Honourable Mailantarki once more displayed a rare sense of generosity when he distributed an empowerment fund of nine million Naira among the people of his constituency, all the while ensuring that beneficiaries were equally selected from all wards in order to avoid bias and maintain uniformity. His outreach programmes have so far reached a modest estimate of 20,000 people.
Furthermore, Honourable Mailantarki has proven his commitment towards ensuring a revival of the agricultural sector in his constituency, and indeed the country at large, by consistently donating trailer-loads of fertilizers to the farmers in his constituency, especially in Kwami and Funakaye – two areas in which farming is largely considered as the mainstay of the people. The farmers could not express their appreciation enough as the infusion of fertilizers caused their yield to double and their income to increase considerably. Every year, Honourable Mailantarki distributes not less than 700 bags of fertilizers among his people.
With respect to power, Honourable Mailantarki further eased the suffering of his people when he donated a 500 KVA transformer to the Fantami ward. In addition to this, in recognition of the commercial importance of the famous Kasuwar Katako (wood market), he also donated a brand new transformer in order to boost productivity. Barely a month ago, Mailantarki also donated imported hospital equipment to hospitals within his constituency.
What many seem to find extremely remarkable is the fact that he takes care to attend to the needs of not just APC members and supporters, but of youths even in rival parties because according to him, winning by a landslide of 95% of the registered voting population is a clear indicator of the fact that his people voted for him irrespective of party affiliation. Honourable Mailantarki is a man that has been described as a true man of the people – one who recognizes that his constituency comprises of everyone in it and not only those who belong to his party or support him. His motto is ‘constituency first’ and as his many social outreach projects (few of which are mentioned above) suggest, he truly is committed to living by this. He is also the sole source of funding for Gombe State APC.
The people of Gombe, Kwami and Funakaye have found, in their humble representative, not the usual type of politician who is prone to forgetting the electorate, but a philanthropist, brother and a true man of the people, and the support that he enjoys from people both within and outside his constituency is truly overwhelming. It is indeed very rare to find a politician who goes the extra mile to directly or indirectly touch the lives of his people.
Mailantarki is a shining example of all that leadership entails, and people like him give Nigerians the hope that good leaders really do exist.
