Kaduna 2015: Why Nasir El-Rufai? By Sulaiman Confi
He is an environmentalist, a Quantity Surveyor, a public Servant par excellence even though an accidental one, the kind of leader “most wanted” in our generation, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai.
We watched as seconds transform into minutes and minutes metamorphose into hours, but Kaduna state remains stagnant! No any radical or meaningful change. No thanks to the amateur style of governance we are witnessing, and the low level of governance we witnessed in the past which does not seem to change if the conduct of the sate handlers is any guide.
It’s obvious that we don’t need a puppet in Kaduna, because if you look at most performing governors in Nigeria (maybe with the exception of Fashola) are puppets to no one, someone may tell you that El-rufa’i is the puppet of Buhari, I don’t believe that, beside even if he is one, then I’m assuring you that the most independent and rationale thinking puppets are that of Buhari. Here him on this;
“I don’t have god-father, the only god-father I have is the God Almighty himself. I have never had god-fathers in my life but I have mentors I respect, like General Muhammadu Buhari the leader of our party. I have same for former President Olusegun Obasanjo. I worked for him, but even Obasanjo cannot force me to do what is not right. I am not designed so,” he insisted.
We look at history and access today to know what the future might hold, looking back into El-rufa’i’s past, you can’t fail to be amazed by the successes he achieved right from his Barewa days, ABU days, his youth service, when he ventured into practice and the role he played in government during Gen. AbdulSalam’s regime, BPE and as minister of FCT. Mind you he is Natural born genius; I mean a constant First class material, yea all time.
I never knew El-rufa’i as someone that burst about his job at FCT, so I dug out some of his achievements, it wasn’t an easy research, because the man never reeled out his numerous achievements to my knowledge in any interview (because they are numerous to mention) everyone who knows Abuja before/after will understand what I’m saying, so the ones below are what I gathered from many write ups I read.
The high level of sanity Abuja residents enjoyed, Air and the perfection being experienced in the city was all as a result of handwork of El-rufa’i.
The dream of the fathers and designers of Abuja was being made a reality, through same man.
He re-established the Architectural plan of Abuja through pursuing a ruthless & careful approach of Kenzo Tange’s design of FCT Abuja (Kenzo Tange is the Japanese Architect who designed the city of Abuja).
El-rufa’i moved at the speed of a fighter Jet demolishing illegal structures belonging to the high, mighty and religious groups without looking backwards.
We cannot forget so quickly that he personally supervised demolition of the Senate President’s house (Anyim Pius), PDP Chairman’s house (Ahmadu Ali), former IGP’S house (Musliu smith) ; etc…such is the leader that musters all boldness to do what is right, and the one we need now!
He completed many uncompleted contracts in Abuja, ones deliberately abandoned since the early years of Abuja. By eventually cancelling the contracts and re-awarded same to other serious contractors i.e. continuity, you can as well believe that we have so many uncompleted projects in Kaduna, e.g. millennium city.
He brought about sanity and discipline at the FCDA and AMACs, AEPB, AIPDB in the form of sacking the corrupt officials and bringing on board the fearless team which was later removed by his successors. Just like we need in KAPWA, KASUPDA etc
The little things we disregard but which actually make a city functional such as traffic signs, road marking, directional signs, cleanliness (Refuse Collection), landscaping/Street-lighting, etc., were effectively carried out under his leadership
He brought about positive overhaul to the transportation in Abuja, the green cabs, The London Taxis etc.
He first introduce AGIS (Abuja geographic information system) in which all lands and buildings are captured for easy planning, allocation, maintenance etc. since then many states established theirs Nassarawa-NAGIS, Niger-NIGIS, Kano-KANGIS among others (thanks to El-rufa’i).
His incorruptibility makes him the darling contestant for all, (remember the issue he had with senator Zwingina, Sodangi, Mike Adenuga?),
in line with the characteristics of Nigerian government, they go after any opposition voice found wanting, El-rufa’i would not have seen the light of the day if he had some record of corruption or negligence of duty.
This man has been a symbol of opposition to a tyrannical government even before he joined any party.
Many court cases were filed against him that he won, and still winning, the latest is the one he won against the SSS & DSS. Recently in an interview he was asked if there is any abracadabra he use to win court cases, and he said “it’s just truth”.
I pray more victory should come, and a slice of victory at the polls will put the icing on the cake.
This and many more asserts his superiority over all other contestants. As such, comparing them to El-rufa’i is like comparing apple and yam. Even as at now we can see the inflaming paranoia, apprehension and tension in the governors camp with the latest incident where his convoy stops off to
destroying of El-rufa’i’s posters.
Honestly, I won’t vote for anything less than an El-rufa’i, like him or hate him he is guaranteed to work.
So we shouldn’t follow any desperate politician who has nothing to offer except division and has no programme except billboards and posters,”
