Justin Bieber to Head to Space
Justin Bieber is getting ready for his next big adventure: a trip to space, or so says Virgin Galactic’s billionaire founder Richard Branson. Bieber is just one of numerous high-profile celebrities to recently purchase tickets onboard one of Virgin’s upcoming space flights (Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hanks, Ashton Kutcher, and Stephen Hawkings are a few others). Though the young pop star has yet to confirm his plans to head to space, all of the evidence points in the direction that he is indeed set upon exploring (a small part of) the final frontier in the upcoming years.
If you haven’t heard already (and if you haven’t, you must have been hiding under a rock for the last year), Virgin Galactic is a privately owned company that is set on providing sub-orbital spaceflights to tourists. Though preparations for the first flight are still under way, and though there has been some slight trouble with the technology thus far, the very first flights are planned to launch from Earth sometime next year (2014).
It is important to note that these spaceflights will be sub-orbital. This means that the spaceships (and the passengers inside, including, possibly, Justin Bieber) will not complete a full revolution of the earth. Instead, it will briefly reach space (outside of the Earth’s atmosphere) and then descend once again to the planet because of the trajectory at which it was launched.
If you want to fly on one of Virgin Galactic’s first spaceflights, then you will have to be willing to dish out at least $250,000, the cost of a single ticket. Surprisingly (or maybe not so surprisingly, considering that they get to go to space), over 550 people have already put money down on tickets.
Evidence of Bieber’s Purchase
As mentioned above, Justin Bieber has yet to conclusively confirm that he is indeed heading to space on a Virgin Galactic spaceship. However, much evidence points to the fact that he is indeed planning on doing so. The biggest piece of evidence is that Richard Branson, founder of Virgin, has stated himself that Bieber bought a ticket. This is further confirmed by a tweet that Branson put out (stating the Bieber was traveling on his ship) and that Bieber retweeted on his personal Twitter. In fact, Bieber’s manager (who has also, apparently, booked a flight) tweeted on his own Twitter that he and Bieber were headed up, up and away. As you can see, all of the clues point in the same direction.
So, the questions is, what does this mean for us all? Why is Justin Bieber heading up to space important? While the teen star’s trip to space isn’t necessarily going to change the course of human history, the flight itself will indeed be a milestone in human exploration. Furthermore, the sheer cost of sending such a flight up and out of the atmosphere requires the support of wealthy celebrities like Bieber. So, in a roundabout way, Justin Bieber is helping man push the boundaries of space flight, exploration, and tourism all at the same time.
