JTF Soldiers Go on Rampage in Maiduguri, Kill Civilians and Burn Houses
Maiduguri, the troubled capital of Borno state was yesterday turned upside down by rampaging soldiers attached to the Joint Task Force following the killing of an Army officer identified as a Lieutenant who came under the attack of an early morning bomb explosion targeted at a patrol vehicle of the JTF conveying the killed officer and two other soldiers who were critically injured.
Abusidiqu.com gathered that the timed Improvised Explosive Device buried on the highway along the ever busy Lagos Street in the metropolis went off at about 7.15am local time when the JTF patrol vehicle conveying the Army officer who was sitting in front of the vehicle and the two soldiers was passing by.
Few minutes after the killing of the Army officer, hell was let loose as armed soldiers stormed that area especially Gwange ward shooting at everything and anything in sight. As a result, no fewer than 30 residents were said to have been killed by the rampaging soldiers who also set ablaze no fewer than 100 houses and business premises in the area. In the ensuing pandemonium, another bomb was said to have gone off in a residential apartment facing the spot of the first blast, killing a middle aged man believed to be coupling the explosive device.
JTF spokesman, Lt Col Sagir Musa who confirmed the incidents in a statement however played down on the casualty by saying “It is feared that two soldiers sustained injury.” The confusion that enveloped the city prevented officials of the University of Maiduguri and those of its teaching hospital to go to work as they have to pass through the Lagos street to their work place.
As a result of the houses that were burnt, hundreds of residents have been displaced. While on a visit to the ruins of what used to be homes before the soldiers rampage, the state deputy governor, Alhaji Zanna Mustapha appealed for caution. “What do you expect when you kill a soldier? But then I wish to appeal to the Boko Haram members to lay down their arms because if they say they are fighting for the sake of Allah, people are suffering and if they say they are fighting for people, our people are still suffering. Just see what they have put people into now. It is really sad,” he stated, promising that the state government will find a way to ameliorate the suffering of the displaced persons.
