Jonathan’s Supporters Challenge APC to Name Northern PDP Leaders Supporting Buhari
The campaigners for President Goodluck Jonathan’s re-election bid have faulted the comments by the All Progressives Congress (APC) Deputy National Chairman, Senator Lawal Shuaibu, that most elders from the North are in support of the aspiration of General Muhammadu Buhari, describing it as “false, baseless and without an iota of truth.”
The campaigners further challenged the deputy national chairman to feel free to name at least one of such northern elder that are backing the aspiration of Buhari whom they described as an enemy of most Nigerian due to his draconian style of politics.
According to a former member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Shehu Hassan, who is also the National Coordinator, Goodluck Jonathan Grassroots Support Movement, “I am a Nigerian from the northern part of our dear nation. I can, therefore, say that Senator Shuaibu is not in any way more northern than I am. Having served my country in the House of Representatives, I feel I am a leading member of our great party, the PDP.
“I and my colleagues challenge him to feel free to mention just one name of such elders or it would regarded as one of such empty propaganda of the APC. The northern elders are fully in support of the second term aspiration of President Jonathan, because the North has not been improved as in the administration of Jonathan.
“We know that the election will be by secret ballots, but the information we receive from our elders and opinion leaders are encouraging, even from the mosques and churches
“As I said, it is rather unfortunate for a statement like this to be coming from Senator Lawal Shuaibu. But let me ask him, if he can be sincere to himself, let him mention any northern PDP leader who has said he will vote for Buhari. The mass support from our teeming members is unshakable, as every state in the North has witnessed the positive transformation of Jonathan’s administration.
“It is therefore, mischievous and a blatant lie of the highest order for Lawal to make such comments. PDP is still controlling the North and a good number of our candidates contesting for various political offices – gubernatorial, Senate, House of Representatives and state legislatures is a testimony that the PDP is the party of the people.
“All PDP members are of the belief that losing presidential election will affect the party in totality, as such, they will not be tilted towards an anti-party election as Lawal falsely said.
“Let me say it loudly, I’m a card-carrying member of PDP and a stakeholder in Plateau and Abuja at the national level. But this is the first time I have heard such negative utterances so far, which I’m sure is not true. We are all working day and night campaigning for President Jonathan to win his second term come 2015 in a landslide manner that would make a deafening noise,” he said.
On the insecurity ravaging the North, he said: “Yes, the issue of insecurity is worrisome and disturbing. But the insurgency was there before Jonathan’s administration. He is worried and doing his possible best to bring an end to it. One thing is certain, I believe, Buhari is seeking to be Nigeria’s president, not a northern president.”
