Jonathan and His Commercial Prayer Warriors by Ayobami Oyalowo
1. 2 Chronicles 7:14. If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.
Last weekend another round of national prayer was held and in attendance was the president, his yes men and an army of commercial priests and preachers, all jostling for space on a defiled pulpit to be nationally relevant while ensuring not to rock the boat.
Is there anything wrong with prayer? No, I am a Christian and I believe so much in the power of prayer. In fact prayer is a veritable tool to bring God into any situation. But my grouse with the president’s commercial prayer contractors is in the above quote from the bible, and I will buttress it with further biblical passage to prove to you, my readers, that our government is banal and inane; they set a house on fire in a bid to catch rodents. The truth is far from them and all they do is deceive men, but can God be deceived or bribed? The next few paragraphs will attempt to find an answer.
Prayer is talking to God and before God can answer and grant our requests, there are certain basic fundamentals that need to be understood and adhered to. Has the president and his henchmen humbled themselves before they prayed? Have they turned away from their wicked ways? Isaiah 58 tells us what kind of fast is acceptable to God. Verse 6 to 8 says “6 Is not this the fast that I have chosen? To loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free and that ye break every yoke? 7 Is it not to deal thy bread to the hungry, and that thou bring the poor that are cast out to thy house? When thou seest the naked, that thou cover him; and that thou hide not thyself from thine own flesh? 8 Then shall thy light break forth as the morning, and thine health shall spring forth speedily: and thy righteousness shall go before thee; the glory of the LORD shall be thy reward.
God cannot be mocked, after men have dipped their hands into the cookie jar (national treasury) and soon after turn around to seek God, while forgetting the place of repentance, do we think God is stupid? Jehoshaphat was a King that enjoyed God’s mercies, but when he joined himself to the wicked King Ahaziah, God destroyed his works. See 2 Chronicles 20: 35-37 “35 And after this did Jehoshaphat king of Judah join himself with Ahaziah king of Israel, who did very wickedly: 36 And he joined himself with him to make ships to go to Tarshish: and they made the ships in Eziongeber. 37 Then Eliezer the son of Dodavah of Mareshah prophesied against Jehoshaphat, saying, because thou hast joined thyself with Ahaziah, the LORD hath broken thy works. And the ships were broken, that they were not able to go to Tarshish.”
Jonathan as a ruler not a leader, has found company among thieves, crooks and perverse men of questionable character, yet he pays these men whose god is their belly to pray for him, I ask to whom are they praying? Until genuine repentance is sought and got, God will NOT hear you and HE will destroy all YOUR WORKS.I saiah 59: 1 -4 “Behold, the LORD’s hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear: 2 But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear. 3 For your hands are defiled with blood, and your fingers with iniquity; your lips have spoken lies, your tongue hath muttered perverseness. 4 None calleth for justice, nor any pleadeth for truth: they trust in vanity, and speak lies; they conceive mischief, and bring forth iniquity.”
Until this Government understand justice, honesty and fairness, let them organize one million prayer vanity fair, God will just laugh at them from heaven and have them in derision. Imagine this yourself, as they were praying, 13 Nigerian policemen were cut down by the president’s kinsmen, MEND and why didn’t God forewarn them?
As for those deceptive preachers who cannot look at Jonathan in the face and tell him the truth, I have a few words for them.
Nathan the prophet looked at David, an ultimate Monarch with the power of life and death over all his subjects, yet told him the truth to his personal detriment. He warned the King and told him the consequences of his sin without fear and King David repented. But these lousy gods of men, sorry men of God, regularly tell Jonathan what he wants to hear. Please let’s read 2chronicles 18 and see how Michaiah warned Ahab and Jehoshaphat about their impending doom. God allowed a lying spirit to deceive the two Kings by the mouth of plenty prophets and Ahab ended up dying in battle.
Michaiah unlike our Nigerian self styled men of God, told the two kings the truth, for that, he was beaten and locked up in jail for telling the truth. These gods of men in our land are a debilitating scourge. Rather than tell the truth to a Jonathan and other crooks in government, they pray for them and tell them there is peace where there is none.
Hosea 4: 7-9 “7 As they were increased, so they sinned against me: therefore will I change their glory into shame. 8 They eat up the sin of my people, and they set their heart on their iniquity. 9 And there shall be, like people, like priest: and I will punish them for their ways, and reward them their doings.”
The men of God need to take a step back, think and ask themselves, if Jesus were physically around today, what would he do? Jesus called the rulers of his time “a brood of vipers.” He could have taken advantage of his position to enrich himself but he chose not to do such. He upbraided those that should be upbraided and commend those deserving of commendation. The example of the poor widow comes to mind. Jesus chose to publicly acknowledge her and ignored the rich givers. In our various places of worship today, how many poor people get choice seats? Don’t we reserve cushioned seats for our RULERS while the poor worshipers sit on wooden benches at the back of the auditorium unsung and unheralded? Let me sound a note of warning to men whose god has become their belly, in 1 peter 4:17 it is written, “For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begins at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God?”
In conclusion, prayer is not evil in itself, but when said by ungodly and unrepentant men, the word of God in Proverbs 15:8 says, “The sacrifice (supplication) of the wicked is an abomination to the LORD: but the prayer of the upright is his delight.” We can deceive people and organized commercial prayers to the tune of billions but only “Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people.”Proverbs 14:34Luke 13:5 “I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.” God is not a God of confusion, when we genuinely repent and stop paying lip service to the things of God and refrain from using God to milk others for our carnal advantage, only then shall God be found of us and our situation transformed for the better.
