Issues And Perspectives In Osun Governorship Election Cum Impact On The 2015 General Elections By AbdulRahman Agboola
Over Seven hundred thousand votes were casted by vast majority of the eligible voters at the just concluded Osun State gubernatorial election conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission with proper monitoring by both domestic and international observers. The role of security agencies at checkmating the antics of political gladiators during elections can never be over emphasized, especially in forestalling manipulation of the electoral process.
It is unfortunate to note that the hierarchy of our security agencies initially failed to resist the bid of the government in power to drag the security agencies into partiality against the enabling rules and regulations but for the resilience of the masses, their rank and file was forced to thread the path of caution. All our security agencies owe it an onerous duty to the nation to remain impartial in the discharge of their duties at all fronts, but the realities of the roles of the Nigeria Police Force and Directorate of State Security Service in particular during at the Osun Election requires a call for sincerity of purpose in the operations of the security agencies.
The Election witnessed serious clampdown on some leaders of the All Progressive Congress by both the Police and DSSS while the leaders of Peoples Democratic Party enjoyed absolute protection to the extent of turning liberty to license. The abuse of the duty of our Military by the Minister of State for Defense is an issue to be contested at a competent court of law in order to forestall a loss of confidence in the Military by the helpless masses. Security agencies by law are responsible to the nation and not personalities, it is very essential to assert that the loyalty of these agencies belong to the nation and not to the political office holders as been witnessed in the Country today.
In an apparent way to enhance the victory of the Peoples Democratic Party at the polls, it is on good record that the PDP gladiators openly induced electorates monetarily and other wise. Although, the APC gladiators equally distributed incentives to the electorate but in a reasonable and acceptable manner different from the PDP style of purchasing voters card in the bid to deprive the undecided voters the opportunity to cast their votes and bribing a large numbers of the populace with amount ranging from five thousand naira to twenty thousand naira per individual to vote for PDP at the election in fulfillment of the pledge of the PDP National Chairman to induce Osun Voters, which eventually gave PDP the large numbers of votes recorded at the polls.
The determination of majority of voters to maintain status quo in the leadership of the State based on their convictions of the good governance witnessed in the administration of Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, the Governor of Osun State actually led to the triumph of APC at the election in spite of the seeming conspiracy between PDP leaders and the umpires. The tension in the State as a result of the presence of masked security personnel and unprecedented presence of Military Men was doused by pertinacious stance of the masses to remain gallantly behind their Governor in whom they repose a lot of confidence.
The candidate of All Progressive Congress eventually emerged as the winner of the election in a landslide victory but the attempt of the PDP leadership to manipulate the process which was defeated by the masses is an indication of the power of the masses against oppressive tendencies of people in authority abusing their offices to dictate events selfishly at the expense of the will and wishes of the masses.
President GoodLuck Jonathan is certainly an accomplice in the nefarious activities of two serving Ministers of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in the just concluded election in Osun State. The Minister of Police Affairs Mr Jelili Adesiyan who is an indigene of Osun State threw decency into the winds by harassing innocent citizens of Osun State opposed to the aspirations of PDP in connivance with the Minister of State for Defense Senator Musiliu Obanikoro from Lagos State.
It is a known fact that President GoodLuck Jonathan has shown serious desperation in his pursuance of a third term in office through a covert declaration of intention to contest for President again in 2015 under the platform of PDP. Under the watch of President GoodLuck Jonathan, a lot of things are wrong with governance in Nigeria but notable among them is the collapse of Security of lives and properties in the Northern Nigeria. In the bid of President Jonathan to sustain his reign beyond 2015, his hatchet men has succeeded in polarizing the nation along ethnic and religion divides in an inglorious manner but the result of the Osun Election has offered an insight into the expectation of the masses.
A good population of the masses seems not really carried away again by tricks of politicians and are determined to support leaders with capacity to protect them against insecurity and ensure good governance at all fronts. President GoodLuck Jonathan definitely does not possess the credentials to take the nation out of the present doldrums but the masses are skeptical about other personalities as well. They gave their mandate to Mr President with the hope of witnessing great transformation of the nation but what is witnessed otherwise is the worst President in the history of Nigeria who has ridiculed the Office of President by partiality in decision making and policy executions.
An assessment of the mood of the masses clearly shows that the masses are prepared to support viable alternative Presidential Candidate from the leading political parties in Nigeria. To further earn the trust of the masses, the leadership of APC is expected to present a well acceptable personality as the Presidential Flag bearer and ensure the credibility of the 2015 general election by taking appropriate steps to ensure the impartiality of the security agencies and INEC.
An advocacy and progressive actions to ensure sanctity in the operations of the security agencies and INEC has to be fortified by Civil Society Oraganisations while it equally incumbent on them to mobilise the masses for a progressive participation in politics and cushion the effect of monetary inducement of the electorates at elections.
