Is Amnesty for Boko Haram A Sham? Read What Their Leader, Abubakar Shekau Said
While the call for and against amnesty for the dreaded Boko Haram sect still rages and we await the outcome of the committee set up by President Goodluck Jonathan to look into the pros and cons, as well as the modalities of implementing the programme if it sees the light of the day, one question that is begging for answer is whether or not the Abubakar Shekau led Boko Haram sect will accept the amnesty been proposed.
Although the group is yet to make its position know since the amnesty controversy started, if past comment of the sect’s leader is anything to go by, one might just conclude that the proposed amnesty may end up a sham.
On the 3rd of March, 2013, the sect’s leader, Abubakar Shekau in a statement said what looks like the sect will not back down until its quest of establishing an Islamic state in Nigeria is achieved.
Apart from the statement from the sect’s leader, a prominent politician and second repuplic governor of old Kaduna State, Alhaji Balarabe Musa have also stated that the amnesty for Boko Haram is a ploy by president Jonathan to buy political concession from the north in 2015.
Below are the full text of the statement from Boko Haram Leader, Abubakar Shekau and Alhaji Balarabe Musa.
Our war is ordained by Allah – Abubakar Shekau (Boko Haram Leader)
“We are sending this strong message to the people of Yobe, Borno, Bauchi, Kano, Kaduna, Taraba, Adamawa, and any state, that whoever kills any of our members should await a grave retaliation from us. God knows that we don’t kill unjustly except those that conspired against us or those that directly fight us, or the government that is now waging war upon Allah and His Prophet.
We will continue waging war against them until we shall have succeeded in establishing an Islamic state in Nigeria. We are not out to cause destructions, but to correct the ills of the society. And Allah is more powerful than all, and, He has the might. Allah will surely assist us to victory.
This is my message to you. If you have not heard from me all this while, now my message should have reached you all.” – ……Abubakar Shekau (Boko Haram Leader) (March 3, 2013)
Amnesty is a Ploy – Balarabe Musa
“If President Jonathan eventually grants amnesty to members of the dreaded Boko Haram, it is a bait to getting political concession from the North in 2015. Yes, he can do it. It is an attempt. He can use it. May be that was his reason for not doing anything about Boko Haram because he wants to use it to buy political concession from the north.
I have always believed that Boko Haram is more likely to be an agent provocateur established by the federal government to divert attention. With the Amnesty given to the Niger Delta militants, once you create a thing like this, you create something that can always been used by others. It is very difficult for any reasonable person to understand why the president cannot give amnesty to Boko Haram.
Secondly, Yar’adua didn’t give amnesty to Niger Delta militants because he was convinced they had a case. He gave them amnesty because his government was too weak and was afraid of what would have happened if the amnesty had not been given to them. So because of the consideration, he gave amnesty to buy time. Fortunately, it has worked. Now, the Jonathan administration is even weaker than the Yar’adua government because Yar’adua’s government at least had the support of the Northern oligarchy.” ………………..Alhaji Balarabe Musa, second Republic governor of old Kaduna State
