Investigation: The First Wind Power Plant In Nigeria Faces Uncertainty
The first wind power plant in Nigeria located in Rimi local government of Katsina state faces uncertainty after over eight years of construction. The contract for the first wind power plant in Rimi was signed in 2006 between Nigeria and a French owned private power construction company.
It will be recalled that a French engineer working for the construction company was abducted early this year – as a result of which works on the site was halted despite the fact that the project has reached over seventy completion.
During President Jonathan Visit to Katsina five months ago, the President promised to assist in completing and commissioning of the project as soon as possible. He assured Nigerians of his commitment to provide cheap and affordable electricity supply to across the nation.
During a recent visit to the construction site, it was obvious that work on the site is halted, and the site in comatose. There were no laborers, security agents, and construction material all have been moved away. Tall mast have already been erected all over the nearly 10 kilometers long site, while the big bans are laying down near each mast waiting to be placed. Grasses have grown all over the place, grazing animals are by the side grazing, and the gate closed and locked.
The wind power plant is expected to generate eighteen mega watts of electricity after completion. That will be enough to provide reliable power supply to Katsina, Zamfara, and Jigawa states when added with the current mega watts they receive from the national grid. Or if the eighteen mega watts will be diverted to Kano alone that will solve virtually all its domestic electricity demands in the state.
The federal government and katsina state government should move fast to ensure the completion of the power plant soon. That will go a long way in solving power shortage in the state and aid in development.
