INEC Releases Guidelines for New Political Parties Seeking Registration
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has released a guideline that new political parties seeking registration must adhere to before it can be registered by the commission.
According to the draft new guideline for political parties made available to Abusidiqu.com, which was earlier presented to all the registered political parties during a consultative meeting with INEC in Abuja yesterday, groups seeking registration to the electoral body will now pay N1 million as “administrative fee” as against the current N100, 000, being paid, thus representing an increase of 100 per cent.
The new guidelines also require associations seeking registration as political parties to provide evidence of valid location of their national headquarters in the Federal Capital Territory while the Commission shall carry out inspection of the national headquarters to confirm the continued existence and functioning of the address as the party’s national headquarters.
In addition, every association seeking registration as a political party, under the new guidelines, is expected to submit 50 copies of the minutes at which the name, symbol or logo of the association are clearly affixed. This is in addition to submitting 50 copies each of the proposed party constitution and manifesto. The Political Association must also provide the approval and adoption of both the minutes and the meetings held.
