Implementation Of UNEP Report On Ogoniland: Kudos To President Buhari, By Okoi Obono-Obla
I, heartily and sincerely commend President Muhammadu Buhari for directing the immediate implementation of the report of the United Nations Environmental Programme on the restoration of the environment in Ogoniland in Rivers State.
This is a report that former President Good luck Jonathan bluntly refused to implement even though he is from the Niger Delta! It is a shame that President Buhari from the North West is the one that has shown total commitment and the political will towards the implementation of report which is aimed at restoring the environmental degradation and despoliation caused by many years of crude oil explorations in Ogoniland.
This Report was issued in 2011 but until former President Jonathan left office on the 29th May 2015 he was totally lukewarm to its implementation despite the ceaseless agitation by the people of Ogoniland.
However, during the last presidential campaign, General Muhammadu Buhari (as he then was) visited Ogoniland and he pledged that he would implement the Report of the United Nations Environmental Programme on the restoration of the environment in Ogoni land and truly as a man of uncommon integrity President Buhari has kept to his words by directing the immediate implementation of the report that undoubtedly will restore succour and hope to the hapless people of Ogoniland.
This is a lesson and pointer to ethnic and regional champions and bigots that their strident campaign during the last presidential campaign that those from the South/South must vote for former President Jonathan (because he is from South/South); despite his mediocre and lacklustre performance in office that it does not really matter where the president comes from! All we need is a president that is competent, just, honest and nationalistic!
It is certain that the whole idea of regionalised or ethnic president is anathema and out-dated. Otherwise, how could former President Jonathan neglect the South/South so much during his five years he held sway at the presidency?
Why did former President Jonathan refused to bring succour to the people of the South/South? Why did he refuse to fix roads in the South/South? Why did he side Akwa Ibom State against Cross River State in the tussle over ownership of oil wells and allowed the two neighbourly States to tussled to the Supreme Court ?
Why didn’t he find political solution? Why did he give oil wells belonging to Rivers State to Bayelsa State? Why did former President Jonathan suppressed the Report of the Committee constituted late President Umaru Musa Yaradua to look into the tussle between Akwa Ibom and Cross River States over the disputed 76 oil wells?
So does it really matter where the President or Governor or Minister or any public official at both the Federal or State levels comes from?
Of what benefit is to the people of the South/South is Jonathan’s presidency? Of what benefit is to the region is those public officials from there that allegedly stole hundreds of millions of dollars during Jonathan’s presidency?
