Immigration Tragedy: Minister of Interior Writes Wrong Right By Avwenagha Edesiri
Few days ago, I wrote an article on the comments made by the Minister of Interior, Comrade Abba Moro, on the tragic incident that happened during the Nigerian Immigration Service Aptitude Test where we lost 18 great citizens of this country. In the write-up, I was not, including most Nigerians, happy with what the minister said. Instead of sympathizing with the families of those who died, he went on apportioning blame to
the dead. I ended up suggesting that the minister should address the media again and apologize for the provocative comments he made. This leads us to why I have to write this piece; the Minister of Interior
has addressed the media and apologized.
To be honest, I never expected the minister to refrain from his earlier comments; the reason being that most Nigerians, especially government officials, hardly accept that they are ever wrong. Many of them see this act as a dent on their image and profile- they are wrong. So, no matter the pressure from the opposition and social media, they will always result to the words of Pilate: “What is written is written”; and in this case, “what has been said has been said”. But, I am happy that the minister of Interior did not display this same arrogance; rather, he has shown that he is a human being who is, afterall, humble, loyal, and apologetic.
The minister described the stampede at some of the Nigeria Immigration Service recruitment centres as ‘unfortunate and a national tragedy’, and added that this was not a time to apportion blame to anyone.
The minister has now realised that he made a mistake initially when he apportioned blame to those who died instead of being sympathetic. Moreover, the minister went on to make an appeal to all Nigerians to
show some understanding while the incidence is being investigated by the government; a committee will be set up to critically investigate the situation. ………………………
