Immigration Service Recruitment In Abuja Turns Bloody, Six Persons Reported Dead [PHOTOS]
The recruitment exercise into the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) in the FCT on Saturday turned bloody as the struggle by the applicants to get accredited for the test resulted into a bloody stampede.
The recruitment exercise which is ongoing in various centres across the country, except for Borno, Adama and Yobe State due to the security situations there were filled with thousands of applicants jostling for a few job.
At the centre, applicants had gathered at the National Stadium Abuja, venue of the exercise as early as 6 a.m. waiting for the test scheduled for 4p.m.
The applicants, estimated at 67,000, mostly stood in and outside the stadium in anticipation of the commencement of the examination.
NAN correspondents, who were at the venue, report that the overwhelming crowd prevented the immigration officials from carrying out the screening that was supposed to have started at 7 a.m.
An applicant, Abubakar Idris, told NAN that he was in the stadium before 6 a.m. but the gates were locked.
Idris said the gates were later opened around 10:30 a.m.
When the gate was eventually opened, only a small part was allowed for the entry of the applicants, which led to a stampede as applicants rushed into the examination venue.
A lot of the applicants got injured as many were seen climbing on top of each other in a bid to gain entrance into the venue of the exam.
Unconfirmed report indicates that six of the applicants lost their lives during the struggle to enter the national stadium, with many others unconscious after collapsing due to the stampede.
