Being a press text delivered by hon. Yakubu dogara declaring his intention to vie for the speakership of the house of representatives this 30th day of april, 2015.
Distinguished colleagues, ladies and gentlemen of the press, it is my pleasure to address you this afternoon.
Let me first congratulate you, Honourable Members, on your victory at the recently concluded polls. May I also use this medium to wish us all a productive Eighth Assembly and pray that, working together, we can make our country a better place for all of us.
I have called you to intimate you of my carefully thought out intention to run for the office of Speaker of the House of Representatives. I also seek the support of my colleagues and the blessings of God in this onerous task that we have set for ourselves.
My conviction to run for speaker derives from my belief that we have a lot to offer, working with my colleagues in the House of Representatives, our colleagues in the Senate and the Executive in getting this country on the path of progress and development. Our focus in this quest is to consolidate on the achievements of the 7th Assembly.
For us, change means work. A lot of work has been done by the Legislature in the past; we believe a lot more can still be done to take our parliament and the nation to the next level.
As you very well know, Hon. Members and gentlemen of the press, the main focus of the Buhari/Osibanjo administration will be power generation, tackling insecurity, combating corruption and employment generation.
The House of Representatives under our leadership will, aside from collaborating with the government in these efforts, enact enabling legislation for easy attainment of these lofty goals for the well-being of Nigerians.
What is it that we seek to consolidate?
1. To make the House a robust and independent chamber, willing of course, to collaborate with other arms of government in providing good governance.
2. To promote equality of members
3. To encourage a committee system that places premium on the experience and career interest of members.
4. To improve administrative issues in the House by ensuring that electronic voting is instituted as a regular feature.
5. To strengthen oversight and ensure that public funds are judiciously applied and accounted for.
Dear colleagues, I present myself to you for election as your Speaker. I seek your mandate and your trust and hope that you will invest your confidence in me. I am a Lawyer of many years standing and a family man from a humble background. I have been amongst you as member of this House for nearly a decade and will bring my wealth of experience, working with you of course, to make the House as effective as it can possibly be.
Hon. Yakubu Dogara.
