House Speakership: Dogara Support Base Swells
As the race for the speakership of the House of Representatives gathers momentum, one of the front line candidates gunning to clinch the seat, Honourable Yakubu Dogara, has had the number of members of the house supporting his aspiration swelled.
The Bauchi State born legislature is contender with Honourable Femi Gbajabiamila, who is also a strong contender for the speakership seat.
Dogara, in the midst of the political intrigues has been able to secure the assurances of 143 members of the House from both the APC and PDP who have pencilled down their names in his support.
These members have sworn to swim and sink with Dogara irrespective of any apparent future pressure and are also making plans to bring more to the camp.
According to a smart plan been worked out by the camp, each person among the 143 persons has the mandate of bringing at least one more person.
Should this strategy pay off, it means that Dogara could be coasting home with 286 votes out of 360 votes of the House’s numerical strength. But nobody is sure.
“If the permutations work out and members return to camp with at least one more member, it then becomes obvious that Dogara has already won Gbaja”, the source said in confidence.
However, Gbajabiamila is not giving anything to chance as he is seriously networking to reach out to members to ensure his ambition sees the light of day.
While many of the members see Gbaja as a better candidate, the fear of those behind him most especially the national leader of the APC may be a factor that may count against him.
