Group Clamours For Don Etiebet As Next APC Chairman
A group, South -South Progressives for a Better Nigeria, has advocated for Chief Don Etiebet as the next National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Etiebet, who hails from the oil rich Akwa Ibom State, served as Minister of Petroleum under the late General Sani Abacha, and was a former National Chairman of the now defunct All Nigeria Peoples’ Party (ANPP)
In a press statement signed by Barr. Utum Eteng, Coordinator of the group, argued that the position of the National Chairman of the APC be zoned to the South Eastern bloc of the South- South region, saying that the South-South region has been in charge of the party for four years with the present National Chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, who hails from Edo State.
“The South-South region is made up of six states with the states originated from two blocs – Edo/Delta coming out of the old Mid-Western Region, and Cross River/Akwa Ibom/Rivers/Bayelsa coming out of the old Eastern Region,” Eteng explained.
“It will only be fair and proper that pursuant to section 14 and 223 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and Article 13 and 17 of the APC Constitution, that the party should elect the next National Chairman from the old Eastern bloc of the South-South taking into consideration the other bloc has taken its turn,” the statement added.
Recall that President Muhammadu Buhari, on February 27, opposed the National Executive Committee’s (NEC) approval of tenure extension for the National Woring Committee (NWC) and all executive committees of the party at all levels across the country.
Buhari had said at another meeting of NEC in Abuja on March 26 that the NWC’s tenure extension decision was illegal and unconstitutional.
This prompted the National Chairman, Chief Oyegun, to constitute a 10-member technical committee headed by Gov. Simon Dalung of Plateau to advise its leadership on the way forward on the tenure issue.
On Monday April 9, meeting of the APC National Executive Committee (NEC) held in Abuja, and the technical committee recommended the conduct of fresh congresses and national convention after President Muhammadu Buhari had secured the backing of most APC governors.
