Governors, Legislators To Work Towards Constitutional Amendment
The Nigerian Governors Forum and the Conference of Speakers of State Houses of Assembly have agreed to jointly work hard towards a successful amendment of some sections of the country’s constitution.
Chairman of the Governor’s Forum, Abdulazeez Yari, disclosed this to Journalists soon after a joint emergency meeting of the two groups at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
He said the two groups agreed to do so in order to safeguard the country’s democracy.
He said: “The meeting agreed to approach this amendment with maturity and the future of our democracy at the back of our minds.”
Yari further said the meeting resolved that the various State Houses of Assembly should consult widely and also conduct public sittings on the amendment.
“The meeting agreed that the State Houses of Assembly should consult all stakeholders and hols public hearings on all the items transmitted to them by the National Assembly in a bid to promote our democracy and strengthen its institutions,” he said.
Yari, who is also the Governor of Zamfara state, said the meeting also agreed to constitute a committee that will look into the issues related to the amendment and revert to the meeting within a reasonable time.
