Governor Bello Backs Direct, Open Primaries For Niger APC
Niger State Governor Abubakar Sani Bello has lent his supports to open and direct primaries for the All Progressives Congress (APC) primaries exercise in Niger state which remains just a little less than a month from today.
Governor Bello, a staunch and valiant advocate of inclusive governance and grassroots involvement in processes of administration, has carried the mindset over to party, insisting direct primaries, which was recently adopted in Osun State, would enable every card carrying member of the party a legitimate voice in who emerges as candidates of the party across levels of governance.
Direct primaries which enables emergence of the most popular and acceptable candidate is the choice where needs for competence and acceptability of candidates are in consideration, virtues upon which Abubakar has always stood as leader of government since emergence as governor of the State.
Bello, who took up the mantle of leadership of Niger State in 2015, explained he has always been fair to all sections of the state, maintaining “Open, direct primaries is in vogue now because of its enablement of each card-carrying party member, as well as the opportunity to level the field for all aspirants.
Bello’s words: “The question of incumbent governors using their incumbency powers to buy up the college of few chosen voters in indirect primaries is no longer relevant. All aspirants, including me, will go to the field and canvass votes from the people. I am in support of this, not just simply as it agrees with my person, but because it is just in doing this that the best and most popular products can be advertised by our party.
“This process has begun in some state and Niger cannot be an exception. I am sure as it has succeeded in other places, it will succeed here even better,” he said.
