Governor Akpabio Splashes N36.5 Million On Super Eagles Again…Blasts Media For Criticising Him
While the furor raised by the controversial donation of N6 million to six PDP chieftains to buy lunch at a meeting in Port Harcourt last week is yet to abate, profligate governor of Akwa Ibom state, Godswill Akpabio yesterday again splashed another whooping N36.5 million on the super eagles with a promise to do more.
Akpabio who announced the donation at the Government House Banquet Hall, Uyo said the donation is to appreciate the national team for winning the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) last month in South Africa.
He announced that from the total sum, each of the 23 players should take home N1 million, the three assistant coaches to get N1million each, the chief coach, Stephen Keshi will take N2 million while the 17 the back-room staff received N500,000 each. The goalkeeper and the stand-in captain of the team, Vincent Enyeama, who is a native of the state would apart from the cash donation, also get an already completed three bedroom apartment.
While promising to do more, Akpabio said he will discuss with the Nigerian Football Federation to see how he could further assist the team to aid their participation in the confederation cup competition coming up in Brazil.
Akpabio also seized the moment to blast the media for always taking pleasure in criticizing him for wasting his state’s funds on irrelevant ventures even as he accused journalists in Nigeria of suffering from anti-colonial masters complex.
“Nigeria is a place where bad news is good news. Nigerian press has not yet learnt. From the West African Pilot, the press was set up in Nigeria to fight the colonial masters and to fight for independence. Many years after the colonial masters left, the Nigerian press is still fighting government and up till now they still don’t know that the colonial masters have gone”, he stated to mock the media.
“If I donate to the church and you get angry with me should I donate to Satan?” , he asked in response to his critics.
