Former NSA, Gen.Azazi, Kaduna Gov Yakowa, Others Killed in Military Helicopter Crash
Immediate past National Security Adviser, NSA, Gen.Andrew Owoeye Azazi, Governor of Kaduna state, Patrick Yakowa are among occupants of a Naval helicopter that crashed in Nembe Okoroba area of Bayelsa state today killing all on board. The Nigerian Navy’s Agusta helicopter, marked Helo 07, was said to have crashed in Nembe Okoroba area at 3.30pm local time.
The dignitaries who perished along with their aides Dauda Tsoho and Warrant Officer Mohammed Kamal and the pilots, Commander Muritala Mohammed Daba and Lt. Adeyemi O. Sowole were said to have gone Bayelsa to attend the burial ceremony of the late father of a special assistant to President Jonathan, Mr Oronto Douglas and were on their way back to Port-Harcourt when the military chopper crashed.
Naval spokesman, Aliyu in a statement today confirmed the incident adding that ”Search and Rescue operation is ongoing by a combine team
of security personnel from the Joint Task Force in Bayelsa, Nigerian Navy, Nigerian Air Force, NEMA and the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps.”
While reacting to the tragedy, President Goodluck Jonathan expressed utter shock and sadness over the crash in Bayelsa State and
has ordered an investigation into the cause(s) of the crash. In a statement signed by the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the President, Dr. Reuben Abati, the President extended his deep and heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of the deceased, and the governments and people of Kaduna and Bayelsa States.
Jonathan described the sudden loss of these distinguished Nigerians as “extremely painful to the entire nation”.
