Football Round Up: Man United Secures Victory Over Liverpool, As Arsenal Hold Man City.
The much-hyped Super Sunday of football in England lived up to its billing with intrigues and drama.
Liverpool hosting Manchester United at Anfield, in the Launch-time kickoff, started with sworn enemies Patrice Evra and Luis Suarez shaking hands.
Liverpool looked to be the on the upper hand in the opening minutes. That continued even when Jonjo Shelvey was shown a red card for a clumpsy challenge.
Captain Steven Gerrard scored his first goal of the season once the second half commenced. It didn’t take long before Brazilian full-back, Rafael, levelled scores for Machester United.
With eight minutes to full time, Antonio Valencia was fouled by Glen Johnson. Robin Van Persie converted the resultant penalty to hand United all three points.
Later on, defending Champions Machester City and Arsenal drew 1-1. It was a tale of two defenders scoring. It looked like Joelon Lescott’s header was going to hand City a win before Koscielny bundled home the equaliser.
In other selected games, Newcastle United beat Norwich 1-0 courtesy of Demba Ba’s strike. AVB got his first home win as Tottenham Hotspur manager as they beat QPR 2-1.
On Saturday, Chelsea needed a late goal from Ashley Cole to overpower resilient Stoke City. Nigeria’s Victor Anichebe continued his scoring form in Everton’s 3-0 away win over Swansea City.
Talking about Nigerians, Emmanuel Emenike, Obinna Nsofor, Ahmed Musa and Obafemi Martins were all on the scorers list for their respective clubs over the weekend. While Ahmed Musa’s late goal helped CSKA Moscow to a 3-2 win, Nsofor’s long-range shot sealed Lokomotiv Moscow’s win on Saturday. Emmanuel Emenike scored the first and the last of Spartak Moscow’s three goals on Sunday. In Spain, Obafemi Martins marked his arrival to the LaLiga with a winner for Levante in the 86th minute. He came on as a 45th substitute and struck with his right foot to claim all three points.
Still in Spain, Barcelona had to dig deep before squeezing out a win over hard-fighting Granada. Substitute Xavi Hernandez broke the deadlock with a couple of minutes to go, before an own goal sealed Granada’s fate. Barca now has 15 points from 5 games.
Real Madrid’s game couldn’t hold because of floodlight problems.
