Flying Herdsmen And The Lies Of Men By Abubakar Abba Sanusi
The security situation in the country has continued to spiral out of control despite the billions of naira spent in the sector. From the extremities of the North East to the fertile plains of the middle belt the story remains the same. Carnage, chaos and confusion. The blood shed continues and there doesnt seem to be an end in sight.
The recent attack on some innocent communities in Southern Kaduna and Benue is not only sad but disturbing. More disturbing are the reports going around that the so called fulani herdsmen were armed with sophisticated weapons and get supplies from helicopters in the forest. This is a very serious report that if not properly investigated and stopped, it can threaten the sovereignty of Nigeria.
It is common knowledge that the Fulani herdsman holds his herd of cattle in high esteem and any attempt to rustle this priced possession is always met with stiff resistance. This was the explanation for the incessant clashes between the fulani herdsmen and farmers in the Middle belt. Many concerned Nigerians have canvassed for the establishment of more grazing reserves in the country.
Nigerian are still in a state of shock over the reports of the ‘flying herdsmen’ not only because of the danger they pose but the means through which they acquired the helicopters considering the huge cost involved. The average fulani herdsman and his entire clan cannot afford a single helicopter even if they sell all their cattle. This clearly shows that the situation has since been hijacked by politicians or foreign adversaries for selfish reasons best known to them. Another disturbing fact is the ability of the helicopters laden with terrorists and weapons to fly undetected within the Nigerian airspace. Does it mean that the huge amount of money expended in the aviation sector to secure our airspace cannot be justified?
It is only a nation that is not serious about its territorial integrity that can allow strange helicopters to traverse its airspace unchallenged. Similar reports had also indicated similar activities in the Sambisa forest reserves in Borno state. The situation has the potentials of causing a very bitter war between ethnic groups and religions as it is clearly a handwork of mischief makers who still went ahead to assail our senses with reports that the herdsmen now fly helicopters. This is nothing but tbe lies of men who are desperate and merciless in their effort to undermine the nation’s peace and unity.
