FG Sets Up Committee To Outline the Pros and Cons of Amnesty For Boko Haram
President Goodluck Jonathan today approved the setting up of a special committee with members drawn from the security agencies to discuss the possibility and modalities of an amnesty programme for the dreaded Boko Haram sect.
This development is coming less than 24 hours after meeting with leaders of the Northern Elders Forum, NEF met with President Jonathan at the state house in Abuja Wednesday night to discuss the possibility of granting amnesty to the Boko Haram sect.
Abusidiqu.com gathered that the committee was set up as an outcome of a meeting of all security chiefs today gathered in Abuja.
The committee whose work will be coordinated by the office of the National Security Adviser, Prince Sambo Dasuki will consider the pros and cons of granting amnesty to the sect and then come up with the modalities for implementing the programme. It has two weeks to submit its report.
President Jonathan had been under pressure to grant the dreaded sect amnesty since his last declaration at a town hall meeting in Damaturu, Yobe state, where he said amnesty will not be given to Boko Haram because they are faceless, but he suddenly changed his hard line position at a meeting with the northern elders yesterday night.
