Femi Fani-Kayode’s Permanent Interest, By Ajibola Bakare
It was only a few days ago that I took to twitter, one of the widely used social media platform by Nigerians to express my concern and opinion about the monumental failure we are experiencing in this oil rich Nation. These failures are as a result of obvious Leadership deficit at all levels of government. I remembered in one the tweets, I wrote about a statement once told me by a former governor that “in politics, there is nothing like permanent friend nor enemy, only permanent interest exist” He said your allegiance to a group or political party is always based on what you stand to get from the group or party and not the class of people that make up the group or party.
I have always looked out for classic example(s) that perfectly fits that statement until yesterday when a 2 time minister of the Federal republic of Nigeria, confidently, without minding whose ox is gored parted ways with the All Progressives Congress(APC) to reunite with his bride of old time, the Peoples’ Democratic Party(PDP) for obvious reasons he stated. He is Mr Femi Fani-Kayode, the same controversial writer and politician who loves media attention. His name recently came to bare when he sometimes last year, released the names of women he has had sexual relationship with. Ofcourse, Nigerians, including myself were not taken aback when he announced his exit from the APC. He began his re-admission process back to the PDP when he recently came public to express his dissatisfaction with the religious inclination and the modus operandi of the APC, particularly, the much talked about Muslim/Muslim presidential ticket and office sharing.
Don’t look too further. I’m talking about the same Femi Fani-Kayode (FFK) that has been throwing jabs and banters at the GEJ/PDP led administration both on the social media and traditional media. He is officially back to his vomit, sorry, his former party. The public declaration became necessary when leadership of the APC yesterday dissociated itself from FFK through its interim publicity secretary, Alhaji Lie, sorry(not again) I meant Lai Mohammed.
Femi Fani-Kayode’s exit from the APC, among other reasons, wasn’t unconnected with the fact that the APC is a party of Boko Haram sponsors and sympathisers. He was quoted as saying he can’t be involved in a party that is filled with Boko Haram sympathisers and doesn’t regard people of other religious standing other than Islam. This facts are serious concerns that Nigerians should not sweep under the carpet, especially after the same was said of the party by another controversial preacher, and convener of the Save Nigeria Group, Pastor Tunde Bakare. A matter can only be established from 2 or 3 witnesses. In this case, the witnesses are inner caucus members of the party.
Could FFK have claimed oblivion to these obvious facts all along or it just dawned on him that his interest and ambition that landed him with Boko haram sympathisers in the first place, is been threatened and heading for the rock. Could his religious belief have stood in his way of getting the benefits and privileges accrued to him as foundation member of the APC, thus his exit?
Like the biblical prodigal son who suddenly realised that being a servant in his fathers house is much more profitable than being a slave in another man’s compound, FFK also realised that feeding from crumbs that fall from the PDP’s table is better than nothing at all from APC. But one thing Nigerians mustn’t fail to do is salute FFK’s courage to have swallowed his pride to pledge loyalty to a man he once dissed, criticised and abused. A few other gladiators have taken that bold step and many will still do in the coming days, weeks and months. Cross carpeting is allowed in the game, but will FFK’s exist from APC increase PDP/GEJ’s chances at the 2015 polls?
You mightn’t like his face or gut, but one thing you can’t take away from the man is his ability to properly articulate his words, be it on a 140 character platform, or a platform with no restrictions. He will speak his mind even in the face of the most dreadful opposition, just that he had to wait for the Late Ojukwu to pass on before telling the whole world he had an affair with the one time, Miss Nigeria, Mrs Bianca Ojukwu. Mr Fani- Kayode’s nobility may be questioned, but you won’t rule out the fact that he’s a plus to whichever group or party he finds himself. He has a way of making an obvious lie appear true and vice versa. He is one of the few political actors who wouldn’t need to pay #5Million to online attack dogs to defend him when the jabs and banters start rolling in. He’s a one man army. He’s sure to give whoever dares him a run for his money.
I have no doubt that FFK’s interest and ambition would be better taken care of in PDP, but I’m concerned about a man who once called a government a scam and corrupt only to later declare his support and loyalty to the same government. As far as I’m concerned, such a man lacks Integrity, discipline and dignity which are the major leadership problems we are currently facing in Nigeria. It would’ve been a good opportunity for FFK to quit politics when the ovation is loudest having tasted the two major parties in Nigeria.
