FEC Unveils New N100 Centenary Note
The Federal Government of Nigeria has Wednesday unveiled a new N100 banknote in order to commemorate Nigeria’s 100 years of existence since it’s amalgamation in 1914.
The new not was formally unveiled by President Goodluck Jonathan today at the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting.
The new Governor of Nigeria’s Central Bank (CBN), Godwin Emefuele, was on hand at the FEC meeting to present the note.
He stated that the new note was produced with the most advanced technology in the world noting that it still retained the picture of late Chief Obafemi Awolowo on the front side.
He said that the new note has security features against counterfeiting and with special durability and tolerance.
However, the Zuma Rock at the back of the current note has been replaced by Q.R. code and other pictures.
Mr. Emeifele explained that with telephone set and iPad having QR code scanner and the application to be released by the bank, Nigerian will be able to scan and read historical facts about the country.
Speaking, the Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala noted that the Q.R. code features will be useful for students to catch up with the history of Nigeria.
While the launch of the partnership programme aimed at banknote equipment manufacturers and other machine suppliers will hold next Wednesday, the new notes will be issued into circulation on Friday 19th December
The Northern and Southern protectorate of Nigeria was amalgamated in 1914 by British colonial masters and the name which means Niger area came about by lady Flora Shaw wife of the first Governor general Sir Frederick Lord Lugard.
