Fears for 2015 By Tahir Talba
Ordinary critics and pundits who have condemned President Jonathan’s administration and the way he has run this country have themselves been criticised for doing so, and have been tagged ethno-centrists, and so doing, kind of conveniently deflects us from the questions and criticisms that abound with respect to President Jonathan’s tenure at the helm of our affairs. Unanswered queries to this regard as well as the answers that the man himself has given to various national issues just aptly confirm the administration’s incompetence and puts more fears in our minds as to the malady that our country finds itself in.Inheriting problems doesn’t explain nor justify why they should continue to exist and even grow in multiple proportions.
The facade that EFCC puts up in the anti-graft war has clearly disappeared and cases continue to cool off , while more and more offenders go Scott free. The bad roads are getting worse and the decadence in our educational system heaps on and yet, this government should not be held responsible because it didn’t create them. When lives are continually lost in hundreds like drizzles in the sand, are we expected to keep mum and not protest especially when one side of the population appears worst of it? Laws are broken with impunity and people’s rights are trampled upon and more recently, even the citizens in glass houses are helpless before a system that cannot defend what is right, nor a person’s right. If a government cannot start counting what it has changed or reversed and set right, then clearly it has no business being there in the first place. Is it power or health or transportation or education that has recorded any improvements or milestones? We inherited them and should preserve them and make them worse?
The war for power which has consumed this administration from day one has taken it away from man-ning up and facing it’s responsibilities. The tooth and nail struggle for 2015 and the shrewd and embarrasing manner it is playing out in our community square, underlines the resolution that 2015 is actually a do or die affair and come what may, President Jonathan must continue or all hell will be let loose. This administration has waged a war of attrition against all persons interested in 2015 and has buried any idea of nation building elsewhere. When it will face development, only God knows and only he knows if it will ever face it at all after 2015, just like it abandoned it after 2011. It’s campaign is certainly not going to be run on it’s achievements, but rather, on ethnic and religious sentiments.
Outlaws, militants and co, from the niger delta have threatened and condemned everyone that dares to go against President Jonathan’s 2015 ambition and have pledged war, should he not be returned as president. They have highlighted the fact that militancy will be reborn and relaunched should their ‘son’ lose the elections and the government has not uttered a word to condemn them or bring a stop to their threats and chest thumpings.
The PDP is also lining up an automatic ticket for the president and that simply rubbishes our so called democratic processes and clearly, President Jonathan’s 2015 ambition will bring down anything that has any semblance of being in it’s way. Lives were lost in the 2011 elections especially in the northern states that opposed President Jonathan, and many more are continually lost from the insecurity these states are suffering from. The belief that the government has neglected the north with its insecurity runs plenty, so does the region’s apathy towards his ambition for 2015. The opposition is swelling by the day and feeds on the suferings and frustrations of nigerians and almost posing an insurmountable problem for president Jonathan and the ruling PDP which is imploding from similar maladies that the country as a whole is complaining about the administration.
It is not only the amaechis or Lamidos that are defiant and can stand up for change, but the entire country is filled with millions of ordinary citizens that have despaired and suffered with the hope that change is going to come. Realistically, this administration has failed everyone, its supporters and antagonists and has shown that the change it was expected to bring about is not feasible and not a reality. Not because we lack the resources which it has plundered, not because we lack the zeal and belief which it diffuses everyday, but because it is incompetent and insincere and it knows it.
