FASHOLA SACK 778 DOCTORS, EMPLOYS 373 NEW ONES
Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola, on Monday ordered the sacking of 778 striking doctors in the service of the state and announced the immediate recruitment of 373 new doctors.
In the statement signed by the Head of Service of the state, Adesegun Ogunlewe said the 778 doctors were relieved of their duties by the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital Board and the State’s Health Service Commission (HSC), “because of the refusal of the striking doctors to answer to queries issued to them to explain why they were absent from work without leave and without the due observance of the rules and regulations guiding strikes and industrial actions in the State’s Public Service.”
It was learnt that the doctors started receiving their letters of sacking on Monday morning.
Fashola’s action was in response to the refusal of the doctors to end their strike, which has lasted for over two weeks.
Ogunlewe further said the new doctors are to be deployed with immediate effect to public hospitals while recruitment continues to fill newly vacant positions state wide.
It will be recalled that the doctors had initially embarked on a three-day warning strike last month and resumed work, but proceeded on an indefinite strike on April 24 after they were summoned to face a disciplinary panel for participating in the three-day warning strike.
The demand of the doctors like in other states of the federation since September 2009 has always been for the Lagos State Government to fully implement the Consolidated Medical Salary Scale for all the doctors in the state.
CONMESS is the universal scale of remuneration for all doctors in Nigeria regardless of location or employer. It was put in place to curb brain drain and correct wage disparity.
