Ex-PDP Chairman Vincent Ogbulafor Moves To Join APC…Holds Secret Talks With Oyegun
Former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Prince Vincent Ogbulafor who in 2010 predicted that PDP would rule Nigeria for 60 years has begun moves to dump his party for the All Progressives Congress (APC).
This came to the fore today when the former PDP boss arrived at the APC national secretariat at Wuse 11, Abuja at about 2:35pm local time and held a 40 minutes meeting with the APC national chairman, Chief John Oyegun. Ogbulafor who led PDP between 2007 and 2010 was famous for his boast that PDP will rule Nigeria for 60 years.
He was later forced to resign by the Goodluck Jonathan led government over his comment on the zoning of the presidency by the PDP. He had said that power must remain in the North. Soon after stepping down as PDP Chairman, the government filed corruption charges against him. He contested his trial in court until October 2, 2014 the court quashed the case against him.
In a short interaction with newsmen after his meeting with Oyegun , Ogbulafor claimed that he was at APC to congratulate its leaders on the victory at the recent presidential election . He said ” I am here to congratulate APC national chairman for a job well done”.
He noted that it was gratifying that an opposition party would defeat a ruling party, even as he commended the President-elect, Gen Muhammadu Buhari for his steadfastness.
Responding to a question on why he should be visiting and holding a secret meeting with the leadership of APC , he said ” I just came back into town yesterday (Thursday) and I came to congratulate the national chairman of APC for a job well done.”
Asked if his party would be offended by the visit, Ogbulafor asked “How can they feel offended? I am still in PDP.” Asked if he was considering joining APC, he said “Not yet. Even if I will, not yet.”
Reminded of his statement that PDP will rule Nigeria for 60 years , Ogbulafor said “Yes I said so. But when they dismantled governors forum, what do you expect? I am a Nigerian. APC has produced the president of this country and I have to congratulate him for job well done.”
While insisting that he is still a PDP member, Ogbulafor said “I have been National Chairman, National Secretary and Minister. I will remain in PDP until it becomes necessary to make a change.”
Reacting to the visit, the APC Deputy National Chairman, South, Engr. Segun Oni explained that “We just saw the former National Chairman of the PDP around and we learnt that he had fruitful discussion with APC leadership.
“I saw him, but I think it is a private visit he came for. Don’t forget, the National Chairman is his friend and some of us are also his friends. I don’t think it has anything to do with him coming to the APC. Of course, we will be very happy if he comes to the APC, but that is not the purpose of his visit.
“He came to visit his friend and to congratulate us. That is the way politics should be played. Even if he were still the National Chairman of PDP and he comes here to congratulate our national chairman and meet some of us his friends, that will be good politics. I am looking forward to our friend, the National Chairman of PDP visiting us here to say congratulations. As politicians, we must salvage this process called politics. We must rescue it from charlatans. We must give it a colour of decency, we must give it a colour of maturity. I will expect that even if he does not have time to visit us now, he should send us a letter.”
