Ekiti 2014: Group Condemns Fayose Over Serial Attacks On Govt Aides
The Peoples Campaign Organisation, (PECO) has berated the Ayo Fayose campaign office for its serial attacks on the convoys of the Ekiti State Governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi. In a statement issued in Ado-Ekiti this evening, the PECO spokesperson, Mr Suleiman Ojo, said its volunteers were eyewitnesses to the gun attacks unleashed on the convoy of Dr Fayemi as the convoy snaked through the main highway in the state capital twilight of Monday.
“We are witnesses to this criminal act. Our volunteers on a campaign for good governance saw how scores of gun men came out of Fayose’s campaign office to shoot at the convoy of the Governor. We urge the Federal Government to stem the emerging culture of violence in a state that has enjoyed relative peace for the past four years”, Ojo said.
In the statement, Mr Ojo said the attacks appear coordinated and with premeditated targets.
“The convoy was moving at a slow speed and usually without siren,” he said. “Suddenly armed men trooped out of Fayose’s campaign office and started shooting at the governor’s convoy. We do not have the figures of possible casualties, but many people were injured and there was a stampede”
PECO said the attack by Fayose’s supporters infuriated hundreds of bystanders who confronted the armed men but they were dispersed by the sporadic gunshots.
“PECO is in Ekiti to help nurture democratic culture through a peaceful election. We are worried that a group said to be backed by the Federal authority appears to be bent on disregarding basic electoral rules,” the statement concluded.
