Dogara Lanches Legislative Agenda With 162 Members-elect In Attendance
Hon Yakubu Dogara (APC, Bauchi), one of the contenders for the speakership of the House of Representatives has lunched his legislative agenda ahead of Tuesday`s election.
In an elaborate event held at Sheraton Hotel and Towers Abuja, attended by 162 members-elect cutting across all politocal parties, Dogara said is elected Speaker he will introduce sectoral debate in the House.
He said the format of presenting motions and debates will changed in that the House under his leadership will devote weeks or months debating critical sectors of the Nigerian society like Education, employment, healthcare, etc.
The lawmaker also disclosed that he will commissioned a need assesment of the actual financial need of the House of Representatives including members` running costs, committee fundin, oversight, etc.
Dogara also said the method of budgetting will change as he seek to give the National Assembly role in budget formulation and conception.
The Bauchi born lawmaker further promised to restructure the 91 House standing committees, activate the code of conduct for members and run a transperant and an open parliament.
He said the independence of the legislature cannot be compromise.
Representatives of lawmakers from the six geo-political zones also spoke throwing their weight behind Dogara`s candidature.
Rep. Nnenna Elendu Ukeje (PDP, Abia) who spoke on behalf of the south east zone, said the zone is solidly behind Dogara`s speakership bid.,
Rep Ossai Ossai from Delta state told the mamoth crowd that gathered that the region has no any other candidate than Dogara and will deliver bloc votes for him on Tuesday.
Rep. Abdulmumin Jibrin who spoke for north west said Dogara comes to the race for speakership without any baggage as a clean and incorruptible lawmaker.
Ustaz Yunusa Abubakar from Gombe state represented the north east and extols Dogara`s leadership qualities describing him as a natural leader who though represents a predominantly Moslem constituency, he has won elections three times which speaks volume of his person.
