Deploy Police to Fight Boko Haram, Not Public Servants- PASAN Tells Police IG
Following the attack on the speaker of House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Aminu Tambuwal and other lawmakers by the Nigeria Police, the National President of the Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN), Comrade Fatai O. Jimoh has strongly condemned the action describing as the height of impunity exercised by the Nigeria Police.
Comrade Fatai made this known in a press statement signed by the organization deputy secretary, Comrade Ibrahim A. O. Expressing the organization’s position on the siege laid on the National Assembly, Fatai decried the falling state of the Nigeria Police saying the Police Force seem not to be serving the interest of the Nation for reasons best known to them.
Fatai in a statement said the shameful act of the Police in the National Assembly was not a surprise but rather an event that exposed what some members of PASAN who are Staff of the National Assembly, Public Complaints Commission and other Nigerians witness on daily basis, particularly at the entrance of the National Assembly Complex. One of such is the intimidation, arrest and detention of some members of Staff of the Assembly on 13th November, 2014 who dared to request for payment of their legal wages [salaries] under peaceful and democratic demonstration.
Further speaking, Fatai emphasized the need for serious check on imbalances experienced between the Federal Government bodies and staff of the National Assembly. Reacting to one of such issues on a press release made by the dissolved Executive Council of the National Assembly Chapter of PASAN on 3rd November, 2014 titled ‘Notice to all Staff’, issued by the same Mr. Godwin Kyepso. This notice placed by the dissolved Executive Council of the Chapter according to PASAN is a violation of the Court Order issued by the National Industrial Court of Nigeria [NICN], Abuja on 9th September, 2014.
Speaking on this, Fatai said “rather than the Police enforcing the ORDER of the National Industrial Court of Nigeria [NICN], Abuja, by preventing and stopping any action of the dissolved PASAN Executive Council of the Chapter, it probably advised the Management to issue query to the Vice Chairman of the Caretaker Committee of the Chapter in an error because that ought to have come from the National Assembly Service Commission and it was issued without any prior warning.”
According to the Management of the National Assembly, the offence of the charged PASAN members was asking for the prompt payment of the October, 2014 half Salary, which was eventually paid after calling the attention of the Management to that lapse. “We do not know when asking for someone’s right in legitimate means became an offence” he questioned.
In addition, “the non-remittance of the deducted check-off dues of our members directly to the National Body of the Association despite all moves by the Association, the Registrar of Trade Unions, our Legal Consultant and the Nigeria Labour Congress [NLC] that made dissolved Executive Council to fight the National Body and frustrate all its peaceful attempts to resolve the crises amicably against the advice of the President of the National Industrial Court” Fatai stated.
While concluding, Fatai task the Police deplored to the National Assembly to prosecute the illegal and criminal diversion of deducted check-off dues by the Management of the National Assembly from the salaries of our members who are Staff of the Assembly, without remitting same in line with Section 5 [3 and 6] of the Labour Act, CAP L1 of 2004 and Section 17 [b] of the Trade Union Act CAPT of 2004 instead of harrasing lawmakers and staff unlawfully.
Comrade Fatai Jimoh appealed to the leadership of the National Assembly to ensure full implementation of its own resolution without further delay and direct immediate engagement of a competent and qualified Sergeant-At-Arms that will head the Security Department [Sergeant-at-Arms] of the National Assembly.
The National President of PASAN further appeal to the Inspector General of Police to deploy his Police Officers from the National Assembly to the North East Zone of the Country to put an end to the insurgency in the zone instead of harassing obedient civil and public servants at the National Assembly.
