Dawn of A New Era – Generational Voices
Mal Magaji Dambatta, one of the 8 Founders of Northern Element Progressives Union NEPU, the first formal political party in Northern Nigeria, was only 19yrs old when he alongside 7 others, formed the party in 1950. He is the only surviving one among them today. Interestingly, the 1st secretary of NEPU, a person that was very instrumental in the formation of the party, was a Yoruba man based in Kano, Bello Ijumu. The meeting took place in his residence in Sabon Gari area of Kano, and he acted as a secretary.
I started with this piece of history, with these two things; the 1st being the age of Mal Magaji Dambatta (19yrs) when they formed NEPU! The 2nd is that back in 1950, a Yoruba man was made the secretary of something as important as this in Kano. Imagine this happening today, in the current Nigeria that we live in. Only one answer, IMPOSSIBLE!!!
I look at our generation, and wonder where we are heading to in this country. Just sample what our 19 year olds are doing today and even those that are way older than them, then you will know we are in deep trouble. We lack focus, we are lazy, we are still struggling to finish schools, earn a living and be independent. Talkless of assuming leadership positions. Our generation is the most divided in this country, just attempt having a matured conversation with someone not from your tribe, religion or region, and tell me how that will end. For it will surely turn into a fight or take an abusive form. A friend of mine said, ” We Must Develop The Capacity To Talk Without Being Offensive, And The Capacity To Listen Without Being Offended” Indeed, it is true! You can hardly come across a true Nigerian of our generation devoid of all these issues for their kinds are fastly becoming extinct.
These and many more of such make me MAD! We can do better than this, we are better than this. Our generation have the capacity to transform this country and change its cause unto the right path. Let us start now, with Generational Voices, the opportunity has come for us to do just that. Never in the history of this Nation have youths united and come together under one roof with the singular purpose of creating our own future, shaping it to become our own perception of how we want our country to be in the near future. Let every youth be part of this new movement, to take total control of our destiny. Enough is enough. Gone are days of the usual blame game, gone are the days of lack of coordination, and not doing the right thing. Let this be the engine that will make Nigeria to take its rightful position as the giant of Africa, and one of the strongest in the world. If not now, when?
