The Cross River State government has granted amnesty to the militant group known as the Bakassi Strike Force, BSF.
Governor Ben Ayade granted the amnesty to sustain peace across the state.
The militants, who embraced the initiative, surrendered their arms and ammunition to the Nigerian military as well as submitted to a documentation process at Ikang, the council headquarters of Bakassi Local Government Area.
Governor Ayade expressed gratitude to the Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, the Chief of Army Staff and Commander, Operation Delta Safe for overseeing the fruition of the amnesty programme.
“It is unacceptable, for whatever reason and under any circumstance, for a citizen to bear arms. It is unacceptable for any citizen of Nigeria to bear arms. In that respect we want to thank specifically President Muhammadu Buhari, the Chief of Army Staff, the Commander of Operation Delta Safe, who have worked to bring this day to bear,” he stated.
To the repentant militants, he said;“the consequence of your actions has done more harm than good. You have brought your people more pain. And so I thank you for submitting to reason. As I look at you I feel pain, I feel a sense of shame. I feel a sense of defeat as a governor that it took me this long to be able to bring my brothers out of the creeks.”
