Crisis Hit Adamawa PDP Over Marwa’s Declaration to Contest Guber Poll
The vacuum created by the impeachment of former governor Murtala Nyako may indeed be the beginning of trouble for the Peoples Democratic Party as some forces within the party are already at aiming at each other over who will fly the party’s flag in the election expected to find a successor for the impeached governor.
Abusidiqu had reported last week that drama that came with the impeachment of Nyako is far from over and that the PDP may end up consumed in the fire it started just to oust Nyako.
True to that, the declaration of intent by a former military administrator in Lagos and Borno state, General Buba Marwa yesterday has already drawn the ire of other aspirants who described him as an opportunist that wants to reap where he did not sow.
General Marwa declared his intention to contest for the party’s ticket ahead of the by-election to elect a successor for ousted governor, following what he said is the decision by President Jonathan not imposes candidates for the party.
Declaring his interest to contest for governorship at a meeting with PDP delegates from 21 local government areas of the state, Marwa said both the president and national chairman of the party, Adamu Muazu had assured him of their resolve to allow voters elect their candidate without undue interference.
“I know for a fact, some of you are worried that Abuja will nominate a candidate for the party. I assure you that no such plan is being anticipated. I met with the President and asked him directly about the issue and he gave me his words. I also discussed the matter with the national chairman. Both the president and the chairman want a candidate to emerge through election”, he stated.
He warned that the electorate will reject any attempt to subvert the right of the people to determine their candidate through a democratic process.
Calling on the delegates to vote for him, the former Military Administrator of Borno and Lagos states said Adamawa needs somebody who has excelled as state governor of a state to turn around the state.
Marwa promised free education, free medical care, job creation and improved infrastructure if voted in to power, saying “ If I could achieve a lot in Borno and Lagos, what stops me from doing better in my state?” he asked.
But reacting immediately to the declaration by Marwa, one of the other aspirants, Dr. Umar Ardo said the former military administrator wants to ride on the rising popularity of PDP in the state to actualise his ambition after ditching the party saying Marwa is not eligible until he gets a waiver.
“Marwa ran away and abandoned the PDP for APC when the going was rough. Now that the rough road has been smoothened, he wants to come back and contest to sideline those who struggled to keep the party going”, he said.
In his words, ‘’Adamawa PDP has not forgotten how he deserted us on the war front. At the heat of the fight, he ran away from the battle field to a safe haven, abandoning gallant troops to fight the war to victory, only for him now to come back expecting to be given the command of the fighting unit. As a soldier, Marwa should know better than that.
‘’He knows the consequences of desertion at the war front. If he isn’t court-martialed, he certainly won’t be given the formation command.
Dr Ardo maintained that ,’’Besides, by the provisions of Sections 8 (b) & 50 (9) of the PDP Constitution (as amended in 2012), Marwa and his likes are not eligible to contest any elective office under the platform of the party except given a waiver. And the procedure of obtaining a waiver is clearly stipulated under Section 50 (10b) of the Constitution.
‘’As a rational being, he should have done first things first – i. e get the waiver first before declaring to contest. But certainly Adamawa will not recommend waiver for Marwa because it will be tantamount to appointing a deserter as commander of the military formation he deserted on the battle field.
‘’No army in the world can do that – and we won’t do it in Adamawa. In any case, if we had also chickened out like he did, where would he have had the party to come back to contest under?’’ Ardo queried.
