Colonel Sambo Dasuki: Time UP! By George Kerley
In the past one week, I have made statements bothering on the fact that the current National Security Adviser (NSA) Colonel Sambo Dasuki (rtd) is a National Security Misfit. Ninety-nine per cent of people I have encountered agree with me that Col. Sambo Dasuki is not up to the job. Some others have used my position as an opportunity to question the President’s judgment in the appointment of Dasuki.
To these people, I say that Col. Dasuki was appointed on the recommendation of some Nigerians. It is in this same vein that I am also adding my voice to the many who are recommending that he be removed as NSA. Simple.
As a concerned Nigerian and someone who believes in President Jonathan’s commitment to the success of the Nigeria enterprise, it behoves me to do whatever I believe will add value to President Jonathan’s steadied ability to get the job of keeping Nigerians safe done.
It is up to Nigerians, like many others and me, to also give an assessment of those who we think are performing and those who we think are not.
An appointee has the option of performing or not performing. Star performers in President Jonathan’s current cabinet like Agriculture Minister Dr Akinwumi Adesina and Coordinating Minister of the Economy Ngozi Okonjo Iweala came with high recommendations from Global Centers and they have been able to match that with strong competence and capability.
Some say that Col. Sambo Dasuki enjoyed the recommendation of former despot Ibrahim Babangida and his junta accomplice Ibrahim Gusau. Dasuki was ADC to Ibrahim Babangida when he was Head of State and self styled military President. They also say that General Aliyu Gusau (rtd) is married to Sambo Dasuki’s younger sister.
Anyway, we are talking about quelling extremist Islamic insurgency and gruesome terrorism in the North East and not Family Empowerment or Family Support.
The only defense I hear of Colonel Sambo Dasuki is that he is a prince of the Sokoto Caliphate and cousin of the current Sultan of Sokoto.
So my question is, does Boko Haram even respect the Sultan of Sokoto? Talk less of his cousin. Did a former dictator Abacha not depose a Sultan Dasuki? Did the caliphate even sneeze? No.
Has Boko Haram ever listened to the Sultan of Sokoto’s declaration that they should stop the violence in the North East? No.
If he (the Sultan) summons them (Boko Haram) for a meeting today, will they turn-up?
Some say that Dasuki was part of the coup that ousted Buhari and was one of those sent to arrest Buhari.
My question to this group is, how does being a successful ‘coupist’ or coup accomplice immediately translate to being a successful National Security Adviser?
As I join hands with other Nigerians and call for the safe return of the hundreds of female school children who were abducted from their school premises, I also call for a speedy removal of Colonel Sambo Dasuki as National Security Adviser to the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Nigerians need a National Security Adviser who is connected to solutions NOT and not one who is connected to royalty and yesterday’s despots.
I want a Nigerian Security Adviser who will tell the President the basic truths.
A National Security Adviser who will tell the President that with each day that we allow the Boko Haram insurgents to continue to enjoy the comfort of the Sambisa Forest, we give them more leverage.
I want a National Security Adviser who can tell the President that it is okay for the President and the Government of Nigeria to recruit world class Private Military Companies (PMCs) to assist our security agencies in the take-over of the Sambisa Forest and the many other difficult hills and terrains that the savage extremist insurgents have made their abode and terror launch pads.
PMCs have been used to deal with difficult challenges in Afghanistan, Iraq, Baghdad and many others areas with terrorist challenges.
PMCs can also be contracted to support all police outposts in all the remote areas of North Eastern Nigerian that have exposed to insurgent attack.
Dasuki does not fit that bill. So, it is time UP.
