Champions League: Chelsea Plays Draw, As Bayern, Man United, Barcelona Secures Victory
Chelsea began the defence of their UEFA Champions League trophy, with a 2-2 draw against Serie A Champions, Juventus. Roberto Di Matteo’s men took the lead when summer arrival, Oscar, saw his shot deflect beyond Buffon. The Brazilian doubled the lead just two minutes later, with a stunning long-range strike. Arturo Vidal pulled one back before half time. Fabio Quagliarella struck the equaliser late in the second half to deny Chelsea a winning start.
Barcelona survived a big scare at the Nou Camp, as they came from behind to defeat Spartak Moscow 3-2. The Catalans took the lead through Cristian Tello, but the Russians equalised, after Dani Alves put the ball beyond his own goalkeepr. They went on to take the lead through Romulo, before Lionel Messi’s brace ensured the Spanish giants avoided an upset.
Michael Carrick’s 7th minute goal, was enough for Manchester United, as they held on for a win at Old Trafford against Galatasaray, with Nani missing a second half penalty.
Bayern Munich defeated Valencia 2-1 at home, Braga suffered a home defeat to Cluj, while BATE Borisov won at Lille and Shakhtar Donetsk inflicted a 2-0 defeat on Champions League debutants FC Nordsjaelland. Celtic’s game against Benfica ended goalless.
