CBN Hires External Auditors To Probe Multi-billion Naira Vehicle Purchase Scam
The Central Bank of Nigeria has employed the services of external investigators to probe the multibillion naira vehicle purchase scam which led to the suspension of some its staff.
LEADERSHIP Weekend checks revealed that the scam involved a forged email purportedly from the CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele approving the purchase of vehicles worth billions of naira for the bank.
However, the fraud was discovered when the governor denied sending any email approving the said purchase of vehicles leading to the suspension of the officials in the departments involved and subsequent investigation.
It was, however, not confirmed if the said email generated from within the bank or the email of the governor was hacked from outside the bank. LEADERSHIP Weekend however gathered that the fraud was discovered and stopped before the payment was made.
A source who pleaded anonymity confirmed to LEADERSHIP Weekend that the fraud is huge and although such attempts can be made from external sources, it would not be entirely unconnected with an insider.
The CBN in a statement signed by the acting Director, Corporate Communications, Issac Okoroafor, said it had uncovered and aborted a “highly sophisticated plot to defraud the CBN by some criminally minded elements”.,
The apex bank noted that although preliminary investigations have not indicted any insider yet, it has already placed on suspension key personnel involved in the transactions.
Okorafor noted that the decision to suspend the key personnel was to ensure unfettered inquest, even as relevant authorities have not only been notified, but have swung into action.
The bank therefore, assured the general public that the security of CBN remains intact.
