A Call for Sober Reflection by Farid Labaran
You will all agree that events happening today in our society and in our country are quite depressing and apalling.
We are increasingly becoming valueless and careless. Bigotry, nepotism, favoritism appears to be our newest and most intimate companion.
Respect for our selves, cultural values and for one another is at its lowest. Everyone cares more about himself and less about his society and the whole concept of being our brother’s keeper is now alien.Selfishness is the latest attire which almost everyone shamelessly wear especially the youths. Everyone strives to show that he has arrived (meaning he his succesful) by living a life beyond his earnings. This is unfortunate.
We have never been more confused than we are today. We talk more and act less. We profess and even preach what we don’t intend to practice; We have desecrated and bastardised our religions; We demonise and dehumanise our fellow humans; we lie and flatter to gain favors; we make promises only to break them;we critisize sometimes to humiliate…
Honesty,sincerity,uprightness,integrity..seem to be economical and outdated while dishonesty, insincerity, moral decadence..are in vogue, emulated and celebrated even in our so called religious and traditional institutions! Corrupt politicians are celebrated and even rewarded with traditional titles thus giving a stamp of approval to their actions which further encourages and beautifies corruption.
Our elders are in a state of comatose and in poverty of ideas to navigate us out of this predicament while the youths are only interested and excited by satanic, devilish and free masonic matters like music, partying, chasing women, alcoholism, drug abuse etc and not interested in matters that would better their lives and that of the soceity in the long run and thus earn them respect in the soceity and a place in this life and the next.
Have we ever paused to to ask ourseleves compelling questions? Have we ever taken time to reflect on our state and its cause? The leaders are not entirely responsible for the mess we are in even though they shoulder most of the responsibilty because they are expected to lead by example but we are also to blame. Actions have consequences and we are responsible for the consequences of our actions. And what is happening today in Nigeria and beyond is as a result of our daily actions.
As such, with such trying times it is only appropriate for us to collect and gather ourselves, engage in sincere and thorough reflection of the state of affairs. We should look at where(how) we were, where(how) we are and where(how) we want to be. There are those who make things happen, those who watch things happen and those who wonder what happened… We should strive to be among those who make wonderful things happen.
O youths of this nation it is time we wake up from our state of slumber and heedlessness and charter a new course for our nation by contributing positively towards devt. I’m optimistic that we can!
Let’s start by ensuring that we support and elect credible, trustworthy and capable leaders in 2015!
