Borno Police Command Disbands Traffic Officers Over Alleged Extortion, Illegal Detention
The Borno State Police Command says it has closed its Motor Traffic Division (MTD) over allegation of extortion and illegal detention of tricycle operators by the personnel.
The state Commissioner of Police, Damian Chukwu, told journalists in Maiduguri on Monday, that the division would remain closed pending investigations.
Chukwu said that the tricycle operators had alleged that some police traffic officers were extorting them.
“We have closed our traffic division and the erring officers would be made to face the disciplinary committee. Those found wanting would be punished,” he said.
Tricycle operators under the auspices of Association of Tricycle Riders Transport Union in Maiduguri had protested alleged extortion and abuse by police traffic wardens and local government tax collectors.
They barricaded the Borno State Government House road; Post Office roundabout; Kasuwar Shanu road; Customs roundabout and other roads in the state.
Hundreds of the trycyclists blocked the Dandal Police Station where some of their members were allegedly arrested for refusing to fine to the police at the station.
