Boko Haram Strikes in Gombe, Takes Over Ashaka Cement Factory
Boko Haram insurgents have launched another attack on a police charge office in Nafada local government area of Gombe State, killing five military men and an Islamic scholar and looting its weaponry before setting the station on fire.
Residents told the Hausa service of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) that the hooded gunmen invaded the town at noon, shooting sporadically without any response from security forces.
“The masked attackers operated without resistance because the policemen on duty fled to save their lives. They (Boko Haram) went away with all the weapons in there and burnt down the station. There was no casualty because all the policemen fled the scene,” they said.
The command’s spokesperson, Fwaje Atajiri, confirmed the attacks in Nafada, and said that reinforcements had been sent there. He, however, said that details of the incident were still sketchy at press time.
“You can call later for details. We just sent our team there. They are on their way and I don’t want to give you inaccurate information,” Atajiri said.
Meanwhile, the sect took over the premises of a strategic cement manufacturing company, Ashaka Cement, shortly after killing six people, including a Sheikh in neighbouring Nafada town in Gombe State.
Workers at the factory said the heavily armed militants arrived in convoy of pick-up vans and began shooting indiscriminately at workers after the security guards at the company had fled into the bush.
It was reliably learnt that the attackers left Nafada but pledged to return after stealing some Hilux vehicles and carrying off gas cylinders and other such items from the quarry.
The state government, however, has consequently ordered the immediate closure of all boarding schools in the state. It was gathered that an Air Force jet has been bombarding Fika town, the stronghold of the gunmen.
The attack on Nafada and the cement factory comes few days after the sect detonated a bomb at Gombe Line Transport Service, killing and injuring dozens.
A similar onslaught was launched by the insurgents on the police station at Boduje Town in Kwami local government area of the state.
