Boko Haram Goes Gaga…Kills 55 Security Personnel, Sets Public Institutions Ablaze
Few weeks after the massacre that took place in a clash between Boko Haram members and JTF soldiers in Baga, Borno state with at least 185 persons killed and over 2000 houses burnt, men of the dreaded Boko Haram sect again launched an unprecedented attack in Bama, the headquarters of Bama local government headquarters, Borno state killing no fewer than 22 policemen with two of their wives and three children, 13 prison officials as well as two soldiers.
The heavily armed insurgents numbering over 200 were said to have stormed the town where they set free over 109 inmates of the Bama federal prison and set ablaze all government institutions in the town. Apart from attacking the 202 Army Barracks in the town, other places burnt down include the prison service office where about 13 prison officials were killed, and over 109 inmates freed, mobile police barracks where about five policemen were killed, police barracks where three people including a newly wedded woman and three children were burnt alive, Magistrate Court, Revenue office, Primary Healthcare Centre, Local Government Secretariat, among others. Also not spared in the attack were the Divisional Police Headquarters and the offices of the DPO and the Area Commander in the area.
While the sect members had a field day at the police headquarters and barracks, prison offices and other public places attacked and burnt down, they didn’t have it easy with the 202 military barracks located on the outskirts of Bama. They were heavily repelled by soldiers on guard and killed 10 of the sect members while also losing two soldiers to the sect fire power. One of the insurgents indentified as Bakura Ibrahim was arrested alive.
When the JTF Spokesman, Leuitenant Colonel Sagir Musa took some journalists on a guided tour of the 202 army barracks today, the Commanding Officer, Leuitenant Colonel AG Laka showed the media team 10 corpses of suspected Boko Haram members with some of them in military uniforms.
The Commanding Officer said that his men succeeded in killing more than the suspects but that some of them had to pick the corpses on the streets and fled into the bush towards Abbaram before attacking Banki, a town bordering Cameroun Republic.
While giving details of the incident, Lt Col. Musa said “Suspected Boko Haram terrorists today at about 5 am in the morning, about 200 Boko Haram terrorists in 18 seater buses and Hilux Vehicles mounted with anti aircraft machine guns , attempted to attack 202 Battalion Barracks in Bama. 10 Insurgents were killed during exchange of fire. We lost 2 soldiers during the attack.
“They came in army uniform pretending to be soldiers but we were able to detect them. The Boko Haram terrorists also killed 14 Nigerian Prison Officials at about the same time this morning. A total 105 inmates were also freed by the terrorists”
The Police Area commander in Bama town, Alhaji Sagir said the Divisional Police station and Police Barracks were attacked while “22 police officers lost their lives, three Children and a woman were burnt to death.”
