Between Sanusi And Okonjo-Iweala Who Is More Reckless? By Timi Frank
The recently suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, according to the report of the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria (FRC) had allegedly engaged in “unacceptable level of Financial Recklessness” typified by the execution of “Intervention Projects” across the country. The report said the CBN under Sanusi had either executed or is currently executing about 63 of such projects across the country and has committed over N163billion on them.”
However, the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister for the Economy, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala recently claimed that between 2011 to 2013, under her watch, the Federal Government granted import waivers worth N170.7 billion. She also gave the breakdown of the monumental loss to the Federal Government as follows:
2011 – N55.965billion
2012 – N55.345billion
2013 – N59.4billion
Amazingly, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) whose duty it is to execute the waivers ordered by the Minister outrageously contradicted the Minister when the agency put the amount of waivers so granted during the period at N1.4trillion, as follows:
2011 – 480 billion
2012 – 480 billion
2013 – 474 billion
The question is: Between Sanusi’s N163billion (educational intervention) and Okonjo-Iweala’s N170.7 billion or NCS N1.4 trillion on waivers, who is more reckless? Who deserves to be sanctioned by the President?
It is clear that the illegal suspension of Sanusi by President Goodluck Jonathan has validated the saying that “when you fight corruption, corruption will fight you back.” It is also clear that Sanusi is being witch-hunted because he has been fighting corruption.
Thank God that the government did not accuse Sanusi of corruption. He did not also violate the CBN Act. There is no where in the FRC report he was accused of having used government money to build or buy a personal property. These intervention projects were not only to the benefit of Nigerians, they were mainly educational intervention. Above all, they are available for all to see because the report said they are spread across the country and not concentrated to one geopolitical zone. The report did not also accuse Sanusi of concentrating the projects in Kano.
In the next few days, I shall come to Nigerians with further analysis and to compare notes on the amount allegedly spent by Sanusi and the alleged unremitted $20billion oil money by the NNPC. Then we shall find out who is the true culprit between Sanusi on the one hand and the Minister of Petroleum, Diezani Alison-Madueke and the Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) Mr. Andrew Yakubu, on the other hand.
Signed:
Comrade Timi Frank
